I tought off and on at an eastern university over the last few years and my conclusion is that much of what is taught in schools is a waste of time and money. And that's because the people teaching this pap are very second rate. I've had full professors insist that SIngapor is the capital of the Philippines and that the Civil War was fought in 1846. Worse many of them buy into the sillest of conspiracy theories. According to one such "academic" we never got to the moon since calculators weren't available until 1972 or so?!?!?
As long as we tolerate these cesspools of stupidity and support them with truckloads of cash this is what we will get.
Ignorance, indeed.
In mid 60's, I could buy a POCKET calculator at my community college bookstore. Thank you, NASA!
It was very limitied in the number of functions available, was about the size of a 9 transistor pocket radio, cost about $50(!), and ate batteries like candy, so most of us continued to use our slipsticks.
As far as CALCULATORS went, what else was UNIVAC & relatives, if not 'a calculator', albeit large & power-hungry one?
Or, the late 50s/early 60s 20-decimal Marchant desktop scientific electric calculators? KA-chunkata, KA-cunkata, KA-chunkata, Ka-DING!
