Some people can compartmentalise real well when they're not fully put together mentally.

Judith Hawkins met Jerome Berry at a psychiatric hospital where they both worked in the early '60s. That she was white and he was black caused a terrible rift within her family, and when they married all contact between her and her parents was severed. Judy was ecstatic at the birth of her two beautiful daughters (her eldest, Heidi, is married with three children) but that happiness was marred by the fact that Jerome, a heavy drinker, started to abuse her. By the time little Halle was four, thankfully he left.
