My theory is that people in Hollyweird thought Million Dollar Baby was under attack by The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, so they gave it every award they could.

If Fahrenheit 911 had been nominated for 14 awards, it would have won all 14. Even if one of the categories was "Thinnest, Sexiest Director of a Fake Documentary"

I disagree. It's more like making up for the fact that Mystic River couldn't beat the juggernaut of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
