The Case: Sean "Puffy" Combs' rap sheet got substantially longer following gunplay in a Times Square nightspot.
The New York Grand Jury slapped the hip-hopster with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree for having two loaded 9mm guns in his sport-utility vehicle following said shooting. The Grammy-winning rapper could get up to 15 years in prison if convicted on all four charges.
His bodyguard, Anthony "Wolf" Jones, was indicted on one count each of criminal possession of a weapon in the second and third degrees. And Puffy's protégé, rapper Jamal "Shyne" Barrow, was indicted on a whopping 11 counts--ranging from attempted second-degree murder to assault to reckless endangerment--in the shooting, which left three people injured.
According to police and witness accounts, Puffy allegedly started throwing money around Manhattan's Club NY in the wee hours of December 27, irritating some club patrons who confronted him. The "It's All About the Benjamins" rapper purportedly then drew a gun, as did his pal Barrow, who allegedly fired, hitting three bystanders. Barrow was detained at the scene, while Combs, gal-pal Jennifer Lopez and Jones were nabbed by cops while fleeing the club. Authorities recovered one gun on the street after it was thrown from Combs' vehicle. The second gun was found on the floor of the passenger seat. (No charges were filed against Lopez.)
"The decision to indict me is wrong," Combs, 30, said in a statement. "I'm innocent, and we will prove it. I am putting my faith in God, and I know my name will be cleared."
Sidebar: Puffy, who's also facing a $100 million lawsuit from one of the shooting victims, has brought out the big guns, hiring Johnnie Cochran and Benjamin Brafman to provide legal counsel. Cochran, who represented O.J. Simpson, and Brafman, who defended Mob killer Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, join Harvey Slovis on the defense team.
This is the second scrape with the law for Puffy in nine months. In April 1999, he was arrested for allegedly beating a rival music executive, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of harassment and was ordered to undergo counseling. According to newspaper reports, the hip-hop mogul is also being investigated for possible involvement in as many as three other shootings and assaults.
Status: Combs has been free on $10,000 bail since his arrest. He's due back in court February 14.
Guess he considers himself a serious actor since his stint in a Raisin in the Sun last year.
