Jet Skids Off Runway, Slams Into Building In N.J.

POSTED: 7:35 am EST February 2, 2005
UPDATED: 8:36 am EST February 2, 2005

TETERBORO, N.J. -- A small jet skidded off the runway at Teterboro Airport on Wednesday, crossing a highway during the morning rush hour before slamming into a building. At least 11 people were injured.

The plane went off the runway and broke through a fence. It appeared to strike at least one car.

State police said two people were missing and 11 were injured in the crash. It was not immediately clear whether all those people were on the plane.

It was headed for Midway Airport in Chicago, said Greg Martin, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C., and early reports indicate that 12 passengers were on board.

Martin said communication between the air traffic control and the aircraft was routine, and that the aircraft had been cleared for takeoff.

Martin described the aircraft as a twin-engine Canadair, Challenger 60, "a type of small regional business/charter jet," which can carry 12 to 15 passengers.

The building that was struck has been described as a clothing warehouse, and that there were no injuries there, Martin said.

Chopper 4 showed smoke billowing from the building and skid marks leading to the crash site. The tire tracks, plainly visible in snow, ran straight off the end of the runway, through a fence and a snowbank and then across the highway.

State Police Trooper Stephen Jones said emergency management crews at the warehouse were conducting "a rescue operation."

"You act on that assumption until you know otherwise," he said.

Route 46 closed in both directions and broadcast reports said the airport, in the northern New Jersey suburbs 12 miles from midtown Manhattan, was closed.

The FAA Web site says plane is registered to a company called 448 Alliance LLC, and gives an address in Dallas. Directory assistance has no company with that name, but does show a DDH Aviation at the same address. No one answered the phone there.

Once considered a destination for weekend recreational fliers, Teterboro has grown into one of the nation's busiest small airports, catering to corporate jets looking to avoid the hassles of larger airports.

Also, I'd rather hear from FReepers who have real knowledge of aircraft, weather conditions, etc, who might actually have some valuable insight for the rest of us.

I don't think any person's opinion or insight prevents the posting of a more knowledgeable insight by somebody else.

It's generally up to the reader to determine for himself who is presenting the move valuable information.

There has been a bit of controversy around Teterboro over the years because of its location. This crash occurred at the north end of the main north-south runway -- the area to the north of this is primarily industrial in nature with some office buildings, warehouses, etc.

The east-west runway has always been the primary concern, because aircraft approaching from or departing to the west have to fly very low over extensive residential areas in the North Jersey suburbs. There was an incident about six years ago in this area, involving a small private plane that ran out of fuel on its landing approach and crashed into someone's back yard. I remember it was right before Christmas because I was out Christmas shopping at the time and could see helicopters hovering over the scene from a distance.

That kind of thinking will get you in trouble here ;-)

My first thought, too, but circumstances are leaving all kinds of possibilities open.

Teterboro Airport serves smaller aircraft -- primarily corporate jets. I believe it can handle some pretty sizeable planes on its main runway, but there are no major passenger facilities there to speak of and the big airlines all operate out of the other three NY-area airports.

Now, 2 sizable holes are burned through the top of fuselage, indicating severe fire inside.

FoxNews: 2 missing, 11 injured (could change). No one inside warehouse was injured.

Indeed.

I was wondering about the tracks in the snow and why there weren't skid marks.

A report on FOX just stated that there is an anti-skid system on that plane....which would explain that.

Question for aviation expert: Are there pressure recording gages to determine whether or not the wings are delivering lift? Are black boxes required on craft of this size?

This assumes that the crew are the two missing and cannot convey this info themselves.

Here's an interesting local piece of information for those of you out there who might not be familiar with this area . . .

Teterboro is a small municipality in the northern New Jersey suburbs -- located in southern Bergen County, NJ. The airport occupies most of the borough of Teterboro, which is less than one square mile in size. The 2000 U.S. Census listed a total population of only 18 people for this municipality!

It would have a flight data recorder. It will show airspeed, flap, stab positions, engine data, altitude, throttle position, etc.

They will find out what happened.

Now that makes sense...I just don't understand how a plane could travel that far. How close is the highway to the runway?
