When Sen. Hillary Clinton runs for reelection in 2006, her opponent might just be another high-profile attorney from Westchester.Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Pirro is considering challenging the former First Lady, according to political insiders.
The GOP crimefighter, who is running for reelection this year, is not publicly discussing plans for higher office.
But Pirro has a dizzying fund-raising schedule and the enthusiastic backing of Gov. Pataki. "We love Jeanine," said a source in Pataki's camp.
Sources say it is becoming less likely by the day that former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who may be eying the White House, will challenge Clinton for the Senate seat.
A Clinton-Pirro contest has the makings of a marquee matchup between two controversial and ambitious women.
"This wouldn't be just a battle," longtime Pirro friend and Westchester radio station owner Bill O'Shaughnessy told the Daily News. "It would be a catfight, and my money would be on Jeanine."
"There'll be more interest in this than in 'Desperate Housewives,'" he added.
Never one to shy from the limelight, Pirro has an active schedule planned.
Last night, Mayor Bloomberg hosted a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser for Pirro at his upper East Side digs. On Feb 10, she will stage a $250-a-head soiree headlined by radio and TV personality Sean Hannity. And this weekend, Pirro is booked to speak to influential Conservative Party operatives.
That party's leader, Mike Long, said Pirro's crime-fighting pedigree makes her an attractive candidate to his group, even though she is pro-choice. "I certainly think Jeanine could go toe-to-toe with the senator," said Long.
Pirro carries the baggage of husband Al Pirro's 2000 conviction on federal tax evasion charges, which included allegations he fudged the couple's joint returns to support their lavish lifestyle.
But O'Shaughnessy insisted she could get around that issue. "You cannot hold the omissions of the husband against the wife who has her own career," he said.
Pirro's spokeswoman, Ann Marie Corbalis, insisted her boss plans to remain district attorney "as long as the people of Westchester want her."
But Westchester GOP consultant Mike Edelman said Pirro is "taking a good hard look" at the 2006 state attorney general race, and a challenge against Clinton.

How about we keep a smaller tent, and burn their tent down...
Judge Pirro,
Run. Please run. You are smart, ept and ladylike to boot. Give New Yorkers an opportunity to elect a real lady to represent them. Please DO run!
Cordially.
Well put. When he heard them talking about walking him to Ft. Marcy Park, Buddy decided that it was time to bark truth to power. Sadly, before Buddy could roll over on his owner, the Clinton secret police had him hit and killed by a car.
It's unconfirmed, but widely believed, that Socks left Betty Currie and entered the witness protection program disguised as a weasel (imagine Jacques ChIRAQ with more hair).
[Seriously, RIP Buddy, who was indeed run over when he escaped the Clinton hideout in NY.]
The day Hillary goes repub.....I leave the party for the Libertarians. Yeah I know they don't win, but at some point principles have to come into your thinking.
"Buddies death a suicide"
Yeah, if Bill won't be intimate with her, why should the dog have to?

If Pirro runs for Senator, Hill will eat her lunch. If she wants to take a shot at AG, let her. I still think she may be damaged goods because of her hubby. Good to see Mike Long out there again selling what's left of the Conservative Party principles down the Hudson. :-|
*sigh* The difference between Pirro and Clinton is that Clinton will have tens of millions of dollars at her disposal. Pirro will have a hard time raising money. I hate to look at monetary potential when considering primary candidates -- it tends to be mostly a self-fulfilling prophesy -- but in comparing Giuliani to Pirro, I think it's significant.
That said, I wish her the best of luck!

... um, just notice... a District Attorney whose husband ended up convicted? err... uh... that's not going to play very well.
It would if she were running as a 'Rat.
Drop the crack pipe !
Hey she can prosecute and campaign against Hillary at the same time!
Jacques Chiraq could beat her in a GOP primary.
I live in Westchester, and she can not win. She lives a lavish lifestyle in Harrison, NY. She claims she did not know anything about the tax situation, which is a joke.
She is an example of Northeast liberal republicans. RINOs have destroyed the party here into almost nonexistence.
I like Jeanine a lot.
Met her twice and she's intelligent, smart, and tough.
She'll make mince meat out of Madame Hillary in a debate.
Go Jeanine!
Did I tell you she is a beautiful woman?
Four years? I've seen that going on right now.

Pirro is a skank.
"This guy has no chance whatsoever of beating Hillary Clinton in New York. We need someone like Guillinani or Pataki to go against her."
I think Jeanine can beat Hillary and she will.
The debates could be the determing factors in Jeanine's victory.
Go Jeanine!!
