The old girl took a real beating---nearly 50 large and medium claber hits in a reall barroom brawl of a battle.
Most of the ship's senior officers (including the CO, CAPT Cassin Young and her embarked flag officer, Admiral Daniel Callaghan) were killed---and she was brought home by a Lieutenant Commander.
Like her sucessor, brilliant damage control and hard work saved the day.
Make that Ft Point, under the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Ft Mason is a couple of miles East, just before one gets to fisherman's wharf.
Can't speak to whether or not that's the cruiser San Francisco, but the looks of her seem appropriate.
