Went to bed last night and skies were clear. Woke up to wind, snow and a temp of 15 degrees. Snow plow's been past already. I have to be at work at noon and my husband works from 3:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. We're expecting 6 to 10+ inches. We'll just have to take our time. We're in Indiana, Pa. - about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.
Woke up by the howling wind.....Temp is right at freezing....Very hazy outside.
Here's the forcast:
Saturday : Windy with snow, sleet or freezing rain this morning tapering to snow showers late in the day. High 34F. Winds NW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of precip 60%. Snowfall around one inch.
Saturday night : Windy. Snow flurries and a few snow showers throughout the night. Low 11F. Winds NNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 30%.
Morning, Sam, and thanks for starting (what should be) a good thread. It was about 4 below out here this morning when I got up around 5AM. Got wood in the stove, gas in the generator and snowblower, beer and snacks in the fridge and enough sense to stay off the roads in a blizzard. Let it snow.
Here in Mount Airy, MD (near Frederick) we have about a half inch at 9:00 AM. It's coming down at a reasonable clip. We're expecting about eight inches by Sunday morning, when it should stop. Definitely enough time to get the roads cleared off before Monday morning. I anticipate a relaxing weekend (doing indoor chores!) and back to work as usual on Monday. Certainly not a Donner Party situation, but you wouldn't know that to listen to the network news.
It's actually very pretty and the baby alpacas are having fun in it.
It's obvious that there is global warming on the east coast </s
We're having very warm weather for this time of year (60 yesterday and about 51 now (6 a.m.) Maybe the global warming is only hitting the left coast.
In all seriousness, they're expecting a lot more rain, and, since it's warm in the mountains, too, they'll also probably get rain instead of snow increasing the chance of flooding(some of the ski places have closed down because they've lost so much snow).

We live on Long Island. It's 8 deg and we're supposed to get 18" (or more depending on who you listen to).
Our snow blowers are ready, generators on standby.
So far, so good :)
Makes what we're getting here in Michigan look pretty tame.
Lancaster/Lebanon County border (Middlecreek Wildlife Area) - just started to snow and it is 9 degrees!
Ugh, how many days until spring? I'm sick of being cold. I have to work tonight and nurses are not allowed to call out "snowed in".
It's supposedly 2 degrees F, but it's much much colder than that. Being out there for a few minutes took my breath away, and I had to run back inside.
My guess is 3 inches or less (plus a little ice) south of route 66, 3-6 north, but a lot more along the border with PA and N and E of Baltimore.
I have some stupid questions for you guys who live in places where it snows all the time. When I lived up north, I was a dirt-poor student, but I was fortunate that the landlords shoveled the sidewalk for me (They claimed the city had a law & you would get ticketed if you didn't clear it). But I had to shovel a path to the car, and the car itself, with a dustpan because I didn't have a shovel and didn't have the money to hire it done. It took all day. I don't think I've ever cursed that much, before or since. Anyway...
-Is it true that cities have laws/ordinances that require you to keep the sidewalk in front of your house shoveled? If it belongs to the city, why aren't they officially responsible for it? What if you're out of town or something? If there are laws to such effect, I guess I understand the reasoning -- a lot of people used the sidewalks where I lived and you would have to walk on the street if the snow wasn't cleared. But do they actually enforce it?!
-What do elderly or handicapped people do if they can't get out & shovel the snow?
-What if they can't afford to pay someone to do it? Then what?
These are obviously not important questions if you're sitting there with something to do, but if anyone is bored, I would be interested in hearing from you. :-)
This is a great example (for newbies) of a good vanity. Thanks for the thread!
All around us in Fairfax County they are getting 12 inches of snow.
Ice Pellets?
Anyone have any idea what those might be?
Here in WI, we have 9 inches on the ground this morning with 4 more to come. All the talk about people stocking up is so silly. For the first storm several weeks ago, people were going wild- acting like they wouldn't be able to leave their homes for a month. We got a whopping 1 inch of snow in that storm. But for this one? Not near the panic. It's all driven by how much the media plays it up. As for me, I will be going about my normal errands and activities today- I have a haircut appointment and then need to drive the kids to piano lessons. No biggie. I'll just allow more time to travel.
I just hate this stuff. It must have gotten to 80 degrees yesterday where I live in Palestine, Texas. Send me some of that weather, won't you.
In the Detroit area here...western suburbs. We have about 5-6 inches here with some drifting. It's COOOOOOOOOOOOOLD! About 10 degrees right now. Good luck to everyone getting clobbered!
It's 44° and overcast, so send some white stuff down.
4 days before Christmas, we had an icestorm. Stuff was nasty (and people here don't know how to drive in the sunshine, much less ice!) and it took about 4 days before everything got back to normal. Needless to say, I still went into work (and it took roughly the same amount of time to get there)
Enjoy it!!
Here in Bend (OR) we've had highes in the 60's; all the snow has melted and even took the Christmas lights down yesterday. (Who wants to go on a steeped peak roof covered with snow?) I'm aching for one of those two-foot snows...bought a kerosene heater for the garage but in-door friendly just in case the big one does hit.
Hope the power stays on.
