I missed "78" because I was overseas. When I did return to the region I was surprised to see just how much people respond to the forecasted snowstorms.
I do not recall things being so bad before 1978 where people would automatically go into a panic mode. I figure that the supermarket companies encourage the television stations to hype these things up. Supermarkets tend to advertise a lot and so they wield considerable local clout!
This snow season is however shaping up as a big one.

They've "upped" our totals in Albany NY to 18-24" now. Snowing **very** hard aloft - too dry to reach the ground yet.

It's been snowing since about 9:00 am here in Southern West Virginia. We get little flakes then big honkin' flakes... I think we're supposed to get 1-3 inches today with an additionaly 2-4 tonight, more tomorrow. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Yesterday, my buddy said his boss' wife works in a Dr.'s office and a meteorologist came in and said that the Philadelphia Area will be getting 30 inches of snow just like in 1996, but they're not telling anyone because they don't want to start a panic!
WOW! An unsourced, 4th party rumor, that doesn't really make sense on the surface! If that doesn't belong on the net, nothing does!
FWIW, started snowing at 10am in Philadelphia, roughly 4 inches so far. Light pack and small flakes. Looks like it should be a big one.

Not a cloud in the sky, a brisk 61 degrees here in Las Vegas.

Reporting from southern Ontario.
It's snowing. A lot.
Major crisis looming...my daughter is going to have to miss her date with her boyfriend who lives 30 miles away by Lake Erie.

The blizzard's dumping "only" 10-18 inches total here in WNY.
Of course, we've already got a whole bunch of snow on the ground. Even the floormats in my car is caked with snow because I drag it in there with my shoes and it hasn't melted in well over a week.
Have I mentioned how much I'm looking forward to my new job in the South?

It's 3:00 here about 10 miles east of Hartford and it's 6 degrees, so far the high for the day. It is snowing hard with a good wind, tiny flakes falling fast. I have 5 ga of gas, an 8-horse, two-stage snowblower with an electric starter. I should be okay if it stops by noon tomorrow.
I also have 5 loaves of whole wheat raisin bread rising in the kitchen and will get a blueberry pie or two going later. There is something about being snowed in that get's my need for carbohydrates going.
My daughters are all home and nobody needs to go anywhere. It could be fun.

Hey Sam...I'm sure you're looking forward to a win tomorrow for the Pats. I don't see how they can lose.
Well, up here in the hills of northern Morris County, NJ, it's coming down pretty good. We have about 4 inches so far (1500 hours), and I can't wait to use my cherry Craftsman 8HP snow thrower that's been in my garage since the end of October.
