That's my impression of Texas law too. I lived there for decades.
There was an auto repo person killed by shotgun while trying to tow a car away. Apparently the repo person didn't want the police to accompany him as the city of Houston gets 25.00 for their time when doing this.
Looked like theft to the owner, who had some trouble with kids trying to steal his car earlier in the week.
If you own a gun, you are totally foolish if you don't find out what your local state law provides regarding the use of deadly force in protecting your family and your property.
State law varies widely. As many posters have already noted, it's pretty much open season in Texas on perps. In other states, you have a DUTY to try to flee your own home during a nighttime home invasion before resorting to pulling the trigger. It varies that widely.
