Washington Post Buys Slate Online Magazine

WASHINGTON (AP) - Microsoft Corp. sold its popular Slate online magazine Tuesday to The Washington Post Co., a move that makes Slate's political commentary and quirky feature articles more broadly available across the Internet. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Microsoft has said Slate, with roughly 6 million readers monthly, breaks even financially but has sought a buyer since the summer. Under the sales agreement, content from Slate will continue to be available on Microsoft's MSN Web site.
The Post, which has increasingly sought unique content for its Web site distinct from its newspaper articles, said it planned no editorial changes at Slate. Jacob Weisberg will remain editor, and Slate will continue to operate offices in New York and Washington.
"Microsoft has been a wonderful home for us since 1996," Weisberg said in a statement. "It's clear, though, that The Washington Post Company is the best place for Slate to grow and develop."
The Post said it will operate Slate as part of the same business subsidiary, Washington Post Newsweek Interactive, that runs its popular Washingtonpost.com and Newsweek.com Web sites.
In trading Tuesday morning, Washington Post shares rose $8.94, or just under 1 percent, to $942. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $770.00 to $998.75.

I actually like Slate. They have some good columnists, and of course some not so good columnists.
They ususally have a slightly different take on the news aside from the other media lapdogs. Whether I agree with it or not.

I agree with that, but I like this move.
A software company should not be an active organ of a political party. I'm an MS guy for quite a while, but have been looking at going elsewhere for software since my developer $$s are helping to pay for MSNBC and Slate etc. Mr Gates, I already use OpenOffice, don't make me move to other products.
The other upside is that elWaPo is admitting in public they are a liberal piece of something.

"Slate" as a brand seems likely lose whatever remaining strength it had as an alternative. I suspect that WaPo ownership will draw Slate.com into the MSM mindset fairly quickly.

Why would Washington Post want this site? It has been a loser since it's conception. I wonder how long Gates is going to endure MSNBC? It's ratings are horrible although I do watch Hardball some. Matthews is good on some things, but he is so anti-Bush and Iraq that it's hard to find the good stuff.
