ping!
The cheapest solution would be rapid nuclearization of Taiwan, coupled with advanced rocketry in 2500 miles range.
the question seems to be not IF but WHEN China will seize Taiwan (part of China acccording to Chinese mantra).
Who will be next? North Korea? Mongolia? Unruly border provinces with India?
I have been keeping up with this for about five years, and have noticed everything the Chinese are doing is geared toward the offensive. Both Japan and Vietnam have noticed this also.
Thanks tons.
This fleshes out my own rough layman's analysis considerably.
But my rough personal outline was as this article depicts.
Keep shopping at Wal-mart folks, the PLA needs the money to build the weapons it plans to use to kill your kids.
Oh well! At least we will learn the true meaning of the terms; peace, love, equality, tolerance, the big tent, room at the table, racism, discussion, dialogue, debate, sympathy and all the other words and phrases bandied about.
I am not too worried. The more china develops economically, the less they will be able to wage war even if they want to. Businessmen will begin to take over key party leadership positions. All of that economic lobbying will make it extremely difficult for China to act overly aggressively because it will hurt the economy.
Capitalism and free trade = peace.
Might want to read this for some background material

This is the real reason for hating Wal-Mart et al whose billions have made the Chinese military what it is today and worse, what it will become, all the while we fight among ourselves (against the RATs) about military spending.
Ping.
China is doing what any other country would do under the same circumstances.
One would hope that they evolve in their tendencies to run interference against the U.S. for the sake of nationalism, but it is likely that they will not. They will continue to a pain when they can.
As to threats to U.S.security, I believe that is what our nuclear deterrent is for. China is more of a threat to financial security than anything else at this time.
Taiwan is not the trip wire that it once was. I do not see any international support for any confrontation, nor do I see much national support either.
It looks to me like unification is the goal and not just talk anymore. It will be years before that is remotely possible however.
Status quo for now.
I have heard that half of all Chinese are the rare (here) type "O" blood. They may not wish to risk a US release of a virus that specifically targets that blood type. Russia has a lot more to fear than anyone else from the Chinese. Siberia is a vast relatively unpopulated storehouse of natural resourses. Sooner or later we'll probably be rescuing Russia once again.
As a regional power and fast growing country, it is unrealistic that China is not going to upgrade their military strength. To protect their interest all over the world, this is only a simple requirement. The important thing is that whether the government of china is responsible and reasonable. Whether their behavior is based on rules so that unimaginable or inexplainable disaster will not happen.
so why are american corporations moving lock, stock and barrel into china?
and, why are the ladies buying a couple hundred billion dollars of chicom junks per year at wal-mart?

China will not attack the U.S., because we would destroy them.
The U.S. will not attack China, because they would destroy us.
Oh, sure, they can't nuke ALL of us. Just NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, Seattle, DC, Baltimore, Detroit, Indy, Houston, Miami, Boston, San Diego, Louisville, St Louis, Kansas City, Atlanta, New Orleans, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Columbus, Nashville, Lexington, Denver, Phoenix, Honolulu, Las Vegas, and Cincinnati. Or something along those lines.
It's nonsense. There will be no war with China.
I have a question... Let's say china won... what the hell would they do with the US? Seriously? They going to walk down our streets and then what? It has taken them 5 centuries to figure out that a flush toilet might be a good idea?
Seriously some one answer the question?
