Judge: Holiday display O-K, but mayor's oversight hinders free speech

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A federal judge says a holiday display in Rhode Island didn't violate the constitutional separation of church and state. But the restrictions the mayor put on it did hinder free speech. The ruling involves a display on the front of City Hall in Cranston last year. Mayor Stephen Laffey had encouraged residents to put up seasonal displays as long as he deemed them appropriate. What resulted was a display with a menorah, an inflatable snowman and Santa Claus, a Nativity scene and a flock of plastic flamingos wearing Santa hats. The American Civil Liberties Union claimed the display violated the First Amendment. A judge yesterday declared the display O-K on religious grounds, but said the mayor's oversight amounted to a restriction on free speech.

It is time we all declare the ACLU, activist judges and communist politicians as ENEMIES. pure and simple - these people want to destroy our country? Fine! We will destroy them!

I don't know whether to be pleased that there finally is a shrine for the First Church of Pink Flamingos -- or horrified that it is for that breakaway heretical sect that believes, to the peril of their souls and their eternal damnation in the nest of broken twigs, that the holy flamingos should be portrayed wearing Santa Claus hats.

The ACLU is just too nuts. I *love* the flamingos in santa hats, that's hilarious! They need to get over themselves, and realize that they don't represent the majority of Americans.

The ACLU lies...There is no Separation of Church and State in the Constitution no matter
now many times the ACLU and their atheist Marxist minons declare it to be so

There are only lawyer-liars and those who allign themselves with these Christ haters
and then use their lies to promote their own anti God agendas

The ACLU is not nuts - it is attempting to overthrow our way of life in a, so far, fairly successful campaign to ridicule morality and exalt immorality.

Let's not forget the ACLU has come out fighting for pedophiles. And it has extorted small communities with limited finances to bow to its will.

I would love to see the ACLU go after all of the Govt. employee religious holidays, you know separation of church and state and all that blabber; make the clerks go to work on all of those days off. Well, it would be fun to watch.

Joe, I'm not an expert on constitutional law. Here, however, is a reasonable article which is one person's take on what the founding fathers had in mind. You'll have to get past the first part to read the Dr.'s. explanation.. All he best, Joanne
