FYI: people who cohabit before marriage have a higher divorce rate than people who don't. Of course these are just averages and there are exceptions (like the people you know). But I wouldn't recommend it as a way to improve a marriage.
The people I know aren't dummies and have been divorced before. After a 7-12 year tryout period they were already married in the practical sense, so they just made it formal.
