Because the vast majority of parents aren't qualified to teach to their children and schools teach other skills beside the academic ones...

In most cases the "product" is a badly-educated person, without social skills... Not in all cases, but in the majority...

It doesn't say that all schools are "ideal", they aren't... But the fact that parents aren't qualified to teach their children is a fact, especially in specialized courses...

Just because the people you know are stupid doesn't mean everyone else is... It looks like you need some homeschooling.

I only agree with you if the parent is an uneducated hick.

As far as the socializing, the "social part" of my middle school years amounted to total bullying and harrassment on the playground. I learned every curse word imagined. I learned how to smoke. I got groped on the school bus by horny middle school boys.

That's funny. Do you know any personally? All the ones I know are great, happy, well-adjusted kids.

As far as academics goes, homeschoolers constantly test in the 80th percentile.

But most importantly, homeschoolers are free to worship God as their parents see fit, which is the most important part of life and education.

Homeschoolers are provided a step by step curriculum and many have to pass annual state tests. Most homschooled children perform better than their public school peers. If you could see what is going on in the public schools today I'd bet you would change your tune. Saying Merry Christmas is taboo but any other religious salutation is fine. If my kids were school aged there is no way I'd let them attend. The liberal, secularist agenda is way too prominent and I live in a rural area. I can't imagine what the cities must be like.

Home schoolers nowadays have science labs, music classes, art lessons with a regular group of other kids. They're busier than public school kids. And tests prove they perform better quite a bit better. My fear is only that they're a little too coddled which can lead to self centeredness.
My kids go to public school and my husband and I are both public school teachers so I'm not on the defensive.

Maybe in your case, I'd agree. I definitely believe YOU should not homeschool.

I'd tell you that you are wrong, have no idea what you're talking about, are misinformed, the facts don't back you, the exact opposite is true, etc, etc, but other folks have already done that.

"In most cases the "product" is a badly-educated person, without social skills..."

Are you referring to the social skills required for holding up a bunch of security guards with a piece of broken glass or the social skills to have sex in the locker room with all the football players?

I so sorry that you are teaching college courses and have not been around homeschooling families. I'm sure that if you came into our area, around Selfridge ANG in Michigan, you would see what a true homeschooling community is about. You sound very much like my sister, the ex-Cleveland teacher who argued the exact message. Please understand that I have a degree in Business Management but could manage a thing until I got into the business world.

To begin, the vast majority of parents do not get an instruction manual with our children. We teach them language, counting and life skills without being "qualified". It's amazing that any of us turn out ok. When our children turn 4 or 5 we drop them into the hands of "professionals" who teach them the basics that all of us know. Explain why I cannot teach my daughters to add or subtract? Why can't I teach them to read? I'm not "qualified" to teach these?

In most cases, I see positive socialization skills. When I go to a 4-H meeting or Girl Scouts, I see children of all ages playing together. I also see polite, well loved children that are not jumping in one's face because they do not get enough attention from their parents. My girls don't know about sex and thankfully, they will not learn until I teach them. They don't say the words "Fart" nor burp in public thinking it is funny. Those actions which are crass are not acceptable nor amusing in our house. They do not see it in other children.

Could you please enlighten me about the social skills that you feel children ARE lacking by being homeschooled?

Actually, this is not true. A study of 20,000 homeschooled students done in 1998 found that the average homeschooler tested in the 80th percentile on national tests and that 25% are a grade ahead of their peers.

The study also found that parents were more educated then non-homeschooling parents.

The study was conducted by Lawrence Rudner of the University of Maryland.
