VIENNA/TEHRAN (Reuters) - A senior Iranian official said on Thursday he was optimistic Iran would halt its uranium enrichment program as Europe demands, in a move aimed at easing fears that Iran is secretly developing atomic weapons.
"I am optimistic about a positive answer from Tehran to the Paris agreement," said Hossein Mousavian, secretary of the foreign policy committee of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
"In the next few hours I will inform the three EU ambassadors in Tehran of Iran's response," he told Reuters, referring to the ambassadors of Britain, Germany and France which have conducted the EU talks in Paris with Iran.
The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was awaiting a letter from Tehran informing the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog of the starting date and scope of the suspension of uranium enrichment.
The EU's "big three" states reached a tentative deal with Iran in Paris last weekend under which Iran would halt enrichment in return for political and economic incentives.
"Iran wants something up front if it's going to suspend enrichment, not just promises. But the Europeans have refused," a diplomat said.

Actually it says it's a believers duty to be deceitful to the infadels. It's a believers duty.
Well, we know that this pork eating, collie boinking, scotch guzzling Iranian is lying through his turban! We also know that the Eurinals, after being well rewarded, will absolutely believe him and say nasty things because we don't. Thank goodness that we have brave Reuters' bureau people in Teheran who are filing accurate information and target data with the Mossad and CIA. We are not at liberty to say which Reuters folks are sending information, even if this were not a class three secure connection, but suffice it to say that without Reuters coded reports, we might be at the mercy of this lying Irani and the ayatollahs.
OK, so if in fact this is true, that they're being honest then, I suppose they won't mind us giving them two options in their abundant honesty. First that we send American inspectors to inventory, inspect, and remove any enriched material and equipment for doing so for safe keeping here in the USA. They can always demand it back if they change their mind. Second, if they fail to pony up to option one, we bomb the facilities for six months straight until we're satisfied the hole is big enough where the sites were.
TEHERAN - Iran will probably give its formal response on Thursday to Britain, France and Germany on whether it will agree to a suspension of some of its nuclear activities in order to avoid possible UN sanctions, a top official told AFP.
“We will very probably give our response by tonight,” said senior Iranian nuclear negotiator Hossein Moussavian.
The Europeans are pushing for Iran to accept a suspension of its work on the nuclear fuel cycle, including the enrichment of uranium.
“It is not yet clear. There are still internal discussions at a high level,” he said, when asked if the Islamic republic’s clerical leadership would approve or reject a tentative agreement reached last weekend in Paris with the three European Union states.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has told Iran it must respond this week in writing to the European deal if it wants its position included in a report for an IAEA meeting in Vienna on November 25.
This meeting will decide whether to take the Iranian dossier to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions, something the United States -- which accuses Iran of seeking nuclear weapons -- has been pushing for.
But despite Iran’s delay in responding, Moussavian denied reports from the IAEA in Vienna of a snag in the diplomacy and that Tehran had asked for more concessions than the two sides had worked out in Paris last week.
“This is not correct. The last agreement is the Paris agreement. We are supposed to say yes or no to the whole package,” he said.
The main sticking points in the tentative agreement on getting Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment are over the length and extent of any halt, diplomats said.
Uranium conversion makes the uranium gas needed for the enrichment process which makes nuclear fuel, but which can also be the raw material for atomic bombs.
The 25-nation EU, led by Britain, France and Germany, says Iran must indefinitely and fully suspend uranium enrichment activities, but Iran insists its right to enrichment cannot be called into question.
Europe’s three major powers are offering Iran nuclear technology, including access to nuclear fuel, increased trade and help with Tehran’s regional security concerns if the Islamic republic halts enrichment, in an attempt to keep Iran from being taken to the Security Council.
