Where is the 'Christian left'? ( WOW )
The Miami Herald ^ | Nov. 09, 2004 | Leonard Pitts

I have to thank Jimmy Carter for saving my sanity.

Granted, his was not a presidency that one looks back to with fondness. Gas lines stretched forever, Iran took our people hostage, and there was disco.

But Carter's ex-presidency has been a model of that unofficial institution. He has built homes for the poor, mediated wars, helped feed the hungry in Africa, fought disease in Latin America. In so doing, Carter -- a deacon of Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Ga. -- has obeyed a directive that Jesus issued to one of his disciples.

"They somehow have this weird notion that Jesus was an altruist, pacifist, and weakling kind of guy."

They think Jesus is a moral relativist like they are.

Not only that, but peaceful pacifists who think its ok for mothers to murder their innocent babies in the womb. Go figure!

The Left tries to portray Jesus as some sort of benevolent liberal, in their own image. How ironic.

If you want to flush out these phony liberals who suddenly recognize the name of Jesus for their own political expediency, here are a few thoughts backed up with scripture:

1. Ask if Jesus was 'just a man', or is He God?
* John 10:30 "I and the Father are one"

2. Ask if Jesus is judgemental?
* John 5:22 "Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgement to the Son"

3. Ask if Jesus was a "uniter" or a "divider"?
Luke 12:51 "Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division"

If you encounter a leftie who truly understands and respects scripture, ask them how they can possibly justify their political beliefs?! Most likely, you will mostly flush out these phonies for what they are.

We can all pray for the rest of them and for our Nation.

[Jesus and His apostles certainly were not "virtue of selfishness" teachers. The problem with many on the left is that they try to take these admonitions for personal benevolence into a sanction for forced altruism enforced by the power of the government.]

Agreed.

However, altruism and benevolence are not the same thing. I may be splitting hairs here, but to me an altruist loves their sacrifice more than God.

When the woman with a VERY expensive perfume, poured it on Jesus' feet, his disciples created a rucus about why the perfume wasn't sold and given to the poor. His response?..
Mark 14:6 "Leave her alone, Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me."

"Christian left? Isn't that an oxymoron?" ~ TheForceOfOne

Yes. They're more properly defined as the Religious (busy-body, elitist do-gooder, politically correct) Left.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under live robber barons than under omnipotent moral busibodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good, will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ~ C.S. Lewis

Dear Mr. O'Reilly,

Please consider my pithy request to have Dr. Ronald H. Nash, PhD on your show for balance when you feature representatives from the religious left. (His credentials can be found here: http://www.biblicaltraining.org/classes/apologetics/frame.html)

I have many of his books, one of which is entitled, "Why The Left is Not Right - The Religious Left: Who They Are and What They Believe" [Zondervan, Grand Rapids Michigan - 1996].

In it, he examines the writings and work of three major figures who have shaped the current Religious Left scene: Jim Wallis, editor of Sojourners magazine; Ron Sider, president of Evangelicals for Social Action; and Tony Campolo, professor of sociology at Eastern College.

If you're interested in granting my request, I think you'll be able to contact him at this email address: RonNsh@aol.com

As an aside, you may be interested in the comments I made in the thread I'm linking you to below [Please refresh your browser for the latest posts]:

"Since O'Reilly had a couple of guys on his program last night (10-21-04) from the Religious Left - one of whom was specifically referred to as being affiliated with Sojourners - the flagship magazine of the Religious Left - maybe we should request that he give equal time to a Capitalist like Ron Nash."

Thanks for considering my request.

So she considered the overwhelming systemic torture of human beings none of her business? I bet if her next door neighbor was dipping cats into vats of acid or gouging the eyes out of tied up dogs that she would consider it her duty to intervene... but not when this brutality is inflicted on humans?

good point--i will ask him... i want to answer him carefully... he is a pretty new Christian, but his wife has been a Christian for awhile, and has the same views he does...

As I type this message a child is born in Iraq, Should we kill it know or wait 15 to 18 years till he becomes a terrorist. We can keep killing for years and not even put a dent in terrorism. And know the future terrorist can't even say "the American never did any thing to us". We have, we killed their fathers, brother etc. Most of the terrorist are not even fighting by choice. I can not support this not only as a christen but as a human. I can not find in the bible where is say's it's ok to kill sometimes. As far as freeing Iraq, When did the USA become the freedom police. As soon as we leave Iraq it will just go back to the way it was. The cost, a lot of young Americans and a lot of tax dollars . Mean while anyone can still get across our boarders.

Jimmy should have followed the instruction to "get thee behind me Satan."

Carter -- a deacon of Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Ga. -- has obeyed a directive that Jesus issued to one of his disciples.

Jesus' directives were personal, not institutional. There is no salvation for governments and institutions. The only thing governments and institutions can do is make it easier or harder for individuals to personally comply with Jesus' directives. Liberal Christians who believe they are fulfilling Jesus' directives by supporting institutions that take from some people and redistribute it to the politically advantaged are in for a rude awakening.

And has there ever been a self-avowed Christian who has announced his "good works" and "humility" as loudly and publicly as Jimmy Carter?

I wonder how dusty his Bible was when he went to find those few scriptures. Probably the only ones he knows and uses to justify his lifestyle.

If you want, you can tell him the question came from someone who lost a cousin in Iraq in April to a suicide bombing attack :-(

Michael believed wholeheartedly that we were right to be there and one of the reasons was seeing the Iraqis first-hand and how happy they were to be out from under Saddam's butchering thumb. It truly is a fight of good against evil.
