He was John Howland, and he came over on the Mayflower as a "manservant." He fell overboard in a storm, but grabbed a trailing rope, and was rescued.

No lie, I'm related to Martha Washington. The Washingtons were related to Princess Diana, so I'm related to Princess Diana too, and possibly Humphrey Bogart.
