That would be a tragedy (Woody Allen bashing Bush in German paper)
Der SPIEGEL ^ | Der SPIEGEL

Posted on 10/16/2004 5:06:58 AM PDT by trashcanbred

New York comic and director Woody Allen talks about President Bush and the election campaign in the United States.

SPIEGEL: Mr. Allen, do you see your president, George W. Bush, as a comic or a tragic figure?

Allen: Bush himself is rather comic. When you listen to him speak, you sometimes just have to laugh out loud. But if he were to be reelected, that would be a tragedy. ...

SPIEGEL: As a chronicler of Manhattan, why haven't you incorporated September 11th into your films yet?

Allen: I just don't find political topics profound enough to deal with as an artist. After all, the entire history of mankind consists of murders. It's just the cosmetics, the decoration that changes. In 2001, a few fanatics killed Americans, and now Americans are killing a few Iraqis. When I was a child, the Nazis killed the Jews. Now the Jews and the Palestinians are killing each other. Over the thousands of years, politics is too fleeting an affair, too unimportant, because everything repeats itself. But I'm a citizen, so of course I'll vote. ....

Allen: When people in show business take a position in American political campaigns, it doesn't seem to do much good. I guess the Europeans have more respect for artists. In the US, when authors like Norman Mailer or Philip Roth speak out, the only people who acknowledge what they say are those who already agree with them. That doesn't generate any new votes. ....

Allen: With "Fahrenheit 9/11," Moore made a highly successful and good documentary. But the trouble was, the only people who loved the film were the ones who agreed with him. I'm one of them. But Moore was also unsuccessful in influencing the other side. They did a survey to test that hypothesis. A hopeless case.

Woody Allen is in no position to judge what a hopeless case is.

When Woddy Allen bashes the US, can Pee Wee Herman be far behind? Guess all the PERVS and Degens from H'wood will be overseas bashig the US soon. Deaf ears here. Are their careers in need of boosting? Will Woddy share hsi daughter with them?

He got a lot of mileage in his movies by playing a neurotic schmuck. Now I realize his success is based on the same principle Ringo Starr sang about in the old song Act Naturally: "They're going to put me in the movies, they're going to make a big star out of me; I'll act sad and lonely, and all I have to do is act naturally!"

Of course, I must admit, I love his movies, "especially the earlier funnier ones". His early stand-up stuff is ingenious and very funny.

That does it! I'll never watch another one of his flicks.

I agree his older works are funny. But all of his new works are just not there. I think the times changed and so did he... but they went in different directions.

Irregardless he is not someone I hold a lot of respect for. His comments on 9/11 were pretty callous and shows he feels he is "above all that".

SPIEGEL: Mr. Allen, do you see your president, George W. Bush, as a comic or a tragic figure? What typical German arrogance and stupidity ! This is my own question to DER SPIEGEL : " Why did Germans slaughter 6 million Jews in cold blood, and why are German skinheads and Nazis continuing to carry out increasingly vicious and widespread antisemitic attacks against Jews and nonwhites even up to this day? When are Germans going to stop pointing fingers at Americans whose only "crime " has been liberating 50 million people and taking out two vicious dictatorships, and when are Germans going to concentrate instead on their own continuing history of being some of the nastiest racists on the planet and on German unemployment which is already TWICE that in America and still rising?"

Woody Allen is a natioanal embarrassment himeeelf. He is defintaly the stuff of which cartoons are made. Allen with his daughter, albeit adopted daughter (thank god) cum wife, lover, is almost too funny to contemplate. He of the confused genius genre, frizzed out hair etc what's left of it) thick glasses and perpetually changing voice makes most adults blush at his clumbsey attemptss at adult humor via gropiing, overt sexual innuendo and hysterical sexuality. Actuaally no American gives a danm about him. Wonder why the Germans do?
