"Safe space" is not mandatory but voluntary. The whole idea of the program is that if you can't agree with the tenets of the safe space program, don't put a placard up. If you can, you're encouraged to do so, but don't have to.
The assumption that people will be fired for non-participation is pure conjecture and outright nonsense, as is the reference to charges under the hate speech law. Not speaking is hardly hate speech and is constitutionally protected, and if RBC goes overboard and forces PC speech, they're inviting lawsuits they'll easily lose.
Are you saying that RBC has no legal right to restrict speech in the work place?
Every company has some power to limit free expression in the workplace as it pertains to managing work. To force any individual to voice support of a political principle which they don't agree with is begging for trouble though.
I guess the idea here is that the G, L, B or T person, or any combination thereof, will see the sign and no longer have to shout out: "PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! DON'T PUMMEL ME!" as they approach you in your cubicle. That kind of stuff is very disruptive in cubicle land.
I've worked in the corporate world for a long time. I've never heard people bring up GLBT stuff in conversation. Well, actually, there was one person who would bring it up, and he was gay. And he'd introduce the topic out of the blue with comments such as "(Sigh)....sometimes I think all I want out of life is to find a nice man to settle down with." And I'd say something like, "Well, that's just swell, Mike," and change the subject. That's just my Midwestern sense of propriety, you know.
The I'd voluntarily decline to participate.
Safe space for homosexuality? or ANY sexuality? Since when did a WORK space become about being a SAFE SEX(UALITY) place? These people seem to have forgotten the reason for going into business and showing up for work everyday--that is, to make money handling money.
When RBC does this let me know.
I have worked with many gay people throughout my employed life. During working hours it was never a topic of conversation, they never brought up or used their 'sexuality' in anyway. Private conversations during lunch or drinks after work, sure. But never in the work place.
Rainbow triangle huh??
How about a round peg pounded into a square hole instead??
Mother + Father = Children + Family.
This is an equation designed by Nature itself.
"The RBC Safe Space (program) is a visible, non-threatening way to show that your desk, cubicle or office is a "safe place" for gay men,
Pure Homosexual promotion.
A safe place? Yes to do business.
Ever since the statistics showed Homosexuals have a higher than average income and are good credit risks, Bankers welcomed Queers of all stripes to their business.
Bankers love having the Homos repeatedly stick their larger than average" dividends" into their warm, welcoming bankvaults. The morethe merrier.
I fondly remember when back in the good ole days when Banks made it their business to screw their customers and NOT any of their business to whom their customers screwed.
This program is actually used in many other workplaces as well. My school had it, and my shared office does not have a "safe space" placard, nor would I have tried to put one up. Others did.
My AO is. I have a black triangle and white cross on display.
Agreed that sexuality - or any common means of discrimination - should be a non-issue and non-starter in the workplace.
A diverse workplace should not mean blind acceptance of all acts or belief systems, but tolerance for others' right to exist as they are so that they can do their jobs.
A rainbow triangle flanked by a can of Lysol, maybe.
this is hardly voluntary program.
anyone who does not volunteer will be "marked"
Seems like Royal bank is now the "gay" bank.
I would prefer a bank more concerned with my money than orgasms.
.
Restricting speech is one thing. Demanding that a person speak in a particular way is another. Unusual emphasis on voluntariness is often a sign that you are being "voluntold."
Why stop at a rainbow triangle. Surely everyone should have the biological sign for male and female on their desks to show they dont discrimnate against persons of either sex. A Cross to show they don't discriminate against Christians, a Star of David to show they dont discriminate against Jews. A black power salute to show no discrimination against blacks. Etc etc. And lastly a Royal Bank of Canada corporate logo to show that the work area is a safe place for idiots.
... stick of dynamite to show they don't discriminate against Muslims...
