It looks like the documents went to Lockhart at the Kerry campaign FIRST, and Mr. Lockhart is the unimpeachable source that CBS referred to.

Congressional investigations have certainly been called for less.

I think the Lockhart-Burkett is a ruse to get us off the real track. The kerry campaign had the memo's back in April and posted the excerpts on Kerry's web site. I know this because Kerry posted a reference to an Air Force Manual that I cannot find in the Air Force library, present or past, plus the manual that should have covered President Bush's flight status and flight physical was contained in AFM 160-1. The memos had the same bogus Air Force Manual referenced on them. The odds that kerry referenced the same bogus manual in April as the CBS memo's did in September by chance are outrageous.

Keep your eye on the ball folks -- this is misinformation to imply DNC & Kerry didn't *ALREADY* have the documents! (since THEY are the source)

"easy, Burkett has decided he is not going to be the fall guy for this. Soon he will tell where and who gave him the documents in question.
"

Knowing Terry McAuliffe, Burkett has already been threatened with his life unless he tells the media that Karl Rove gave him the documents.

What documents?

How could Lockhart know that Burkett was going to forge documents?

I don't believe ANYTHING Burkett says. But it will be fun to watch as the MSM now has to rip abart their "unimpeachable source" to protect Lockhart. It will only make Rather & Mapes look like bigger fools.

That's what I believe Dan Rather was talking about when he referred to his unimpeachible source. Yes I would have to say that he was referring to Joe Lockhart.

His vendetta against President Bush is kinda nutty.
Doesn't it seem he's accidently, coincidently walked by, overheard, seen a few more things than one person might expect to see or hear?
I'd need convincing at this point that he isn't a little nutty and a liar.

This is disinformation. They want you to believe that since Lockhart did not have the memos they could not have originated from within the DNC. That gives us more reason to believe that they did in fact originate there.

Dan either has to stand by his "unimpeachable source" comment or back away from it. Either way he's screwed.

I'm saddened.

I think he can and should be believed, painting him [Burkett] as a nut job is SOP.

Here's another example of where one term has a very wide range of possible meanings .. "nut."

I figure Burkett is sane, in the clinical sense, but obsessed against GWB. Similar to Mary Mapes in that regard, and Dan Rather, too. You can believe some of what they say, they are not literally delusional, and a good default position toward what they say is to assume it is a lie or a partial truth.

I'm sure Burkett has lied, as has Lockhart, Mapes, Rather, etc. The chore is to figure out which snippets of what they say are in fact true.

Remmeber to that early on the rumors were that the docs came from the Kerry campaign or the DNC. Then they started to setup Burkett to take the fall but now he is fighting back. So, lets not forget The American Spectator article:

Anatomy of a Forgery

By The Prowler

Published 9/10/2004 12:09:06 AM

More than six weeks ago, an opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee received documents purportedly written by President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian.

The oppo researcher claimed the source was "a retired military officer." According to a DNC staffer, the documents were seen by both senior staff members at the DNC, as well as the Kerry campaign.

"More than a couple people heard about the papers," says the DNC staffer. "I've heard that they ended up with the Kerry campaign, for them to decide to how to proceed, and presumably they were handed over to 60 Minutes, which used them the other night. But I know this much. When there was discussion here, there were doubts raised about their authenticity."

The concerns arose from the sourcing. "It wasn't clear that our source for the documents would have had access to them. Our person couldn't confirm from what file, from what original source they came from."

The documents that CBS News used were not documents from any of Bush's personnel files from his time in the National Guard. Rather, CBS News stated that they were documents uncovered in the personnel files of Killian. That would explain why the White House or the Pentagon had never before released or even seen them.

According to a Kerry campaign source, there was little gossip about the supposedly hot documents inside the office of the campaign on McPherson Square. "Those documents were not something anyone was talking about or trying to generate buzz on," says the staffer. "It wasn't like there were small groups of people talking about this as a bombshell. I think people here weren't sure what to make of it, because provenance of these documents was uncertain."

A CBS producer, who initially tipped off The Prowler about the 60 Minutes story, says that despite seeking professional assurances that the documents were legitimate, there was uncertainty even among the group of producers and researchers working on the story.

"The problem was we had one set of documents from Bush's file that had Killian calling Bush 'an exceptionally fine young officer and pilot.' And someone who Killian said 'performed in an outstanding manner.' Then you have these new documents and the tone and content are so different."

The CBS producer said that some alarms bells went off last week when the signatures and initials of Killian on the documents in hand did not match up with other documents available on the public record, but producers chose to move ahead with the story. "This was too hot not to push. If there were doubts, those people didn't show it," says the producer, who works on a rival CBS News program.

Now, the producer says, there is growing concern inside the building on 57th Street that they may have been suckered by the Kerry campaign. "There is a school of thought here that the Kerry people dumped this in our laps, figuring we'd do the heavy lifting on the story. That maybe they had doubts about these documents but hoped we'd get more information," says the producer. "If that's the case, then we're bigger fools than we already appear to be judging by all the chatter about how these documents could be forgeries."

ABC News' political unit held a conference call at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening to discuss the memo and its potential ramifications should the documents turn out to be a forgery. That meeting took place around the time that the deceased Killian's son made public statements questioning the documents' authenticity.

According to one ABC News employee, some reporters believe that the Kerry campaign as well as the DNC were parties in duping CBS, but a smaller segment believe that both the DNC and the Kerry campaign were duped by Karl Rove, who would have engineered the flap to embarrass the opposition.

If true, this is worth opening as a separate thread, and/or forwarding to Powerline, Little Green Footballs or Drudge.

I'm doubt the send part of that. If there was a direct shipment of documents from Kerry campaign or DNC to CBS, it would be too easy to assert and show coordination. I don't think CBS would refer to Lockhart as the unimpeachable source. More likely, Max Cleland vouched for the authenticity, or for Burkett's honesty, etc.

But I do believe that the DNC and Kerry campaign had/saw copies of the forgeries before CBS did. No firm evidence, independent of the article "Anatomy of a Forgery," but that scenario makes lots of sense.

And there are pajama clad snipers ready to put a round through that bulls eye on your forehead (figuratively, of course) at the first sign of BS.
Excellent point. This has to be a major psychological shift for the leftist reporters, to suddenly be totally aware that the whole world is watching THEM, not taking what they say at face value but watching very carefully what they DO and how they do it.

Yes I am saying he is not a nut, the left painted him that way so if he went public they could say he is nuts and you can't believe him, it is SOP.

First of all, none of this will matter. We know that CBS is in the tank with the dems. Is there anyone out there that doubts this? I know some MSM dorks who say CBS made a "mistake" or were "fooled" by the docs. Hello, McFly!!!!

The pressure has to be kept on DR, MM, and AH to resign or be fired.

The MSM is NOW being put on noticed that they better be not only accurate, but "FAIR" in their reporting and not tell us veiwers that they are UNBIASED when they're partisan hacks!!

It's won't work anymore, their TIME IS OVER!!

It is bad for the Kerry campaign if the docs went to Lockhart than to CBS. If as some believe the docs were created within the DNC than the game is over. What we need to find is the proof of this.

I know that the docs were referred to in April and that this may well be an attempt to redirect our attention.

To: I still care

"I've been expecting stuff like this to surface since then, but I don't have faith in the MSM to report it accurately or follow up.

This and the oil for food scandal are probably two of the largest scandals ever to hit politics, but I can't imagine the leftist press covering it at all."

That's because the press is involved with both.

That's the real scandal. We knew the Dems would cheat to win and Saddam would bribe to stay in power, but the fact that our supposedly free press which built itself on exposing the truth and served as a check for the government, would accept bribe money and seek to influence the elections prove that they are the enemy and only look out for their own influence and power. They are no longer relevant.

We still haven't seen the list of individuals from the oil for food program that received bribe money from Saddam and we KNOW there are reporters on that list.

As good as this story is --- showing the whole world how corrupt the MSM is --- it would be even better if these criminals lost their phoney-baloney jobs. It would put the entire leftist-reporter community on notice: you are not as secure in your lies as you think you are.
