A video posted Monday on a Web site showed the beheading of a man identified as American construction contractor Eugene Armstrong, a killing purportedly carried out personally by key terror suspect Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

I don't know if I subscribe to your theory.

After all, look what happened after mere, piddly Abu Graib came out, pale in comparison to the Beheadings of Westerners. How this has been a Republican Adminstration and a Republican Pentagon jacked around and forced into all kinds of hearings, investigations, and handwringings.

We would assuredly have have a loudmouth MSM, Democrat Party, guilt laden Pentagon and State bureaucrats, and a whimpy Congress become outraged at anything we could do in retaliatory response to these enemies. The Enemy Among us, don't you know. It is THEIR intrinsic system of political correctness that has us currently handcuffed in Iraq, and will keep us handcuffed for the long haul, IMHO. Wish I could be more positive. The past 12 months have convinced me of this.

Your response is the most sane I've seen on this thread. Our nation is not great because we can get more medieval than cavemen. We are great because we recognize the value of life and make the decision to take life carefully, generally preferring to avoid collateral casualties. This nonsense about taking out all Muslims, or Arab cities, is the voice of rage. For those of you filled with it, go ahead and rage. But if it was your nation to lead and you had to contemplate taking thousands of lives unnecessarily, you wouldn't be foolish to do what you advocate here. You'd find a better way.
No war is over until enough people have died. We can either get them all out up front and minimize losses on our side, or we can do this the slow way and give up a lot of our kids lives along the way. Which is more humane?

I just saw the video.

Back to the middle ages. 1 chance to convert to Christianity. Then nukes.

Agree 100%.

I cannot bring myself to watch the video. I watched the Nick Berg video and it disturbed me for several weeks.

I suppose Truman was a real scum for dropping the bombs on Japan and saving all those American lives at the expense of the Japanese.

"No war is over until enough people have died."

I don't believe you are advocating killing for the sake of killing. So I'll assume that any collateral deaths caused by using the nuclear option are deaths you would prefer to avoid. If that is the case, and I admit I'm making an assumption from your post, if there are weapons that would achieve the same destruction on our enemy without the collateral damage, would you prefer to use those weapons first?

Olin Eugene Armstrong.

May God grace his parents with strength and may love overwhelm their horror. I feel sick.

My point is that as sad as it is, winning the war cannot be done with pinprick strikes of smart bombs. Until the enemy has seen its cities smashed, its armies slaughtered and its leaders in chains, the fight has not been taken out of him. We saw this in the Civil War, the First World War (in which a Germany that had not felt real defeat n its own soil could later claim to have been stabbed in the back) and the Second World War.

I understand what you are saying, but I think you have much of it wrong. Some here are angry and are venting... others want strong action. I see that you've been a FReeper since April Fools day of this year. I'm not sure what you think of the site and those here, but they are a great group of people. I wish I had them as my neighbors. We are dealing with an enemy that you cannot negotiate with, you cannot bargain with, you cannot walk away from, you cannot surrender to (hopefully the French will learn that someday), you cannot reason with, and you cannot otherwise engage in any type of dialogue. We have decentralized religious factions that hit and run.... melting away into the shadows of sympathizers. The lunatic Islamists face almost no condemnation or even slight criticism from other Islamic groups. This is very disturbing. Yes, we are America and we do not bomb indiscriminately, but others (like Russia) may. What I do know is that these people want to kill all of us. They want to cut your head off along with your family. You cannot reason with them, you can only kill them. They want an Islamic world, and nothing will stop them until they are dead. We could end our support of Israel and pull all Americans out of the Middle East and they would still want us dead. I think where you and I disagree is on where they are and how many there are.

OMG DONT WATCH THIS VIDEO. This is the worst one yet, the noises are just horrible.

My husband just came home. He saw it at work today. I hate these people just for putting that look on my dear love's face. I never really hated before. Now I do. I hate them for making me hate. I hate them for breathing the same oxygen as my children. They don't' deserve to live.

As horrified/furious/enraged/sickened as I feel now by just hearing about it, I thank you for sparing me the image.

My post #241:

"I agree completely that our desire in WWII was to win. As a historian, no doubt you are aware that WWII had its share of politics--not only from the left, but within the military itself. Patton believed he could have ended the war early on several occaisions, but Eisenhower was committed to his "wide front" strategy. Point being there are always plenty of views on how to achieve the final objective. Your post brings a salient point, that our War on Terror should look more like WWII than Vietnam. I agree completely. I would argue that if Truman had the weaponry available we do today, he may have prosecuted the war in Japan differently. His objective wasn't to kill as many people as possible, it was to force Japan to stand down.

I thank Truman for being brave enough to drop the first nukes. But we shouldn't be so enamored of the violence certain tactics make available. Our purpose is to defeat terror, not to create a big body count. To destroy terror, we must destroy the regimes that create it. Again I say cut as wide a swath as necessary, but no more. Vengeange on the enemy, yes. Vengeance on people who may not be our enemy does us no good."

You'll see I'm not advocating pinprick strikes. You may be right about the level of destruction that may be necessary to take the fight out of radical islam. Given their penchant for death, you may even be understating the destruction it may take. There is a lot we need to do before resorting to dropping nukes. We have yet to remove the regimes that support terror. We have yet to unleash Israel. We have yet to decapitate regimes. We have yet to unleash our mighty Marines and let them do their jobs. Our outrage should be directed to the left, because its incessant second guessing the President appears to have slowed him down a bit. If after removing the Saudi, Iranian, and Syrian regimes we still find a steady flow of fanatics, then I'd take it to another level.

The religion of peace strikes again. They have their sights set on destroying western civilization, and we need to open our eyes to that fact. They are rabid dogs that need to be eliminated!

I have seen the video and it is probably the most gruesome of all the videos. You can tell the man is crying in agony even after they've slit his throat. I will probably have nightmares for the next few days at least.

Not to take away from the other beheadings, but damn it man WHY CAN'T BUSH FIND THESE MURDERERS AND GET RID OF THEM!!!!!!!!!??????????????????

I tend to agree with you. But given that we refuse to fire on any thing they call a "holy site" and have left the cancer of Fallujah alone, I fear that we are not even given to half-measures in this battle.

Remember, this is a culture that believed Saddam "won" the first Gulf War because he was still in power. Unfortunately, I fear that only incredible destruction will convince our enemies of their error.

I don't know. Reagan wanted to defeat communism in part because he believed the desire for freedom was created by God in the hearts of all men. He also made no bones about calling the USSR an evil empire. I grant that the radical muslim culture is evil, but I still hope we won't have to kill vast numbers of otherwise peaceful muslims. The trick is to get new, US-friendly regimes in place that will fight these idiots themselves.

The video was horrible to watch. Is is any wonder people are angry and upset?

There also is some feeling of impotence because we haven't been able to stop this kind of stuff.

The majority of people on this site know in their more rational moments that nuking and/or destroying every muslim in the world isn't feasible. Please allow people to be irrational after viewing this video and others like it.

Your message is getting lost in your holier than thou responses. Rather than posting nasty responses, you might do well to ignore threads like this.

After watching this video I could see myself personally torturing and killing each of the individuals responsible for the beheading. It's my gut response and I refuse to apologise for it. Could I really do that in real life? I sincerely doubt it but it helps me to imagine every conceivable torture I could do to people like those in the video.

Back off and let people vent. You'll gain more credibility in the long run.
