Supermarkets regularly send fake shoppers through the store to see how everything's going. There's probably a term for it in the trade.

Corporate should be checking to see if the NY Times #1 bestseller is prominently displayed at every bookstore, and not hidden in the back.

When I worked retail in high school and college, my company had "secret shoppers". They were HQ employees that visited the stores posing as regular customers which enabled them to make sure proper procedures were being followed. At least one person from our store was fired due to a secret shopper observing inappropiate behavior.

Borders as a corporation probably doesn't have a liberal bent, but let's face it, people who work in bookstores (and coffee shops) do overwhelmingly lean liberal.

If Border's is serious about projecting a non-political image, then they should employ the secret shopper technique to make sure that their employees are actually spending their time at work being employees rather than activists.

Make a serious attempt to catch the culprits, additional surveillance cameras, etc. Doesn't have to cost a fortune. Surveillance cameras are available for every budget. Also, I think it would cost virtually nothing to walk into their own franchises once in a while posing as conservative customers (with big Bush buttons on their lapels!) who are looking for Unfit for Command, say, just to see how their employees react to such customers. There have been some horror stories here. But as far as I can tell from this letter, they're going to do nothing, which furthers my suspicion that that outfit is liberal from top to bottom.

LOL . . . Just read the thread and see others had the same idea . . . Sorry, when out for lunch and when I came back and saw your post, I wanted to responds asap so you wouldn't think I was one of those hit and run posters! :-)

Regarding your point about not being able to catch everybody -- or maybe not even being able to catch one person -- it's sort of like laying mines: You make everybody behave and be cautious, including the minority who are doing this stuff.
