BESLAN, Russia - A group of about 30 women and children broke out of a school in southern Russia where militants were holding hundreds of people captive Friday, a news agency reported, after two loud explosions were heard and Russian commandos opened fire near the building.

The Interfax news agency said that the school's roof had collapsed and militants were shelling and firing from the building. Interfax said the hostages who broke out of the school included women and children. It was impossible to immediately verify the reports.

Two helicopters hovered overhead. An ambulance rushed from the scene and CNN reported that at least two people were wounded. On Thursday, the militants inside the school had released some 26 of the hundreds of hostages held inside the building since Wednesday.

Reporter: Up to 100 Bodies in Russia School Gym

BESLAN, Russia (Reuters) - Up to 100 bodies were seen lying in a Russian school gymnasium after troops stormed the building to end a two-day siege, a British ITV News reporter said Friday.

Julian Manyon of ITV news said his cameraman got into the gym briefly and saw up to a hundred bodies. Manyon said, "There were a large number of corpses lying on the smoldering floor." He said it appeared explosive charges laid by the attackers had been detonated.

"The fire fighters have been in there to try and put the flames out. I wasn't able to get through the door. I was stopped by the Russian soldiers. But our cameraman ... did manage to get through the door just for a few moments. He told me that in his estimation there are as many as 100 dead bodies, I am afraid, lying on the smoldering floor of the gymnasium where we know that a large number of the hostages were being held."

They're all saints now.

The monsters who did this will wish they were never born.

I heard this on Fox too. One lady tried to get close to the school to find her young child. She was told not to get any closer as her child had been burned to death because he/she was too young to flee.

Horrible. I picture my 2 1/2 year old in that situation. He's as "big and tough" as his older brothers. But would he know enough to run, or would he even be able to in the chaos. Probably not. With explosions, gunfire, and other people rushing to get out, I would imagine most 2 year olds would probably hit the floor and cry.

I feel sick.

Not all sunnis are the same. Wahhabists a a part of the sunni world. Turkey, Egypt, etc are sunni but NOT Wahhabist. Palestinians are radicals for well known reasons and they find a natural supporter in Saudi Wahhabis. You won't achieve anything with the broad brush here. To call all Muslims Wahhabists is the same as calling all Christians Nazi. Yes Muslims are more susceptible to infection. That's why it's important to cut the sick limb first - Saudi.

I basically agree. I think we can up the ante, though.

I sure hope the Russians don't make any of those Muslims wear women's underwear on their heads.

I'm still waiting for a major news outlet to refer to these cretins as "terrorists" instead of militants.

Oh, I'm sorry, they're "Chechen patriots"... that's coming next in the world's "sensitive" war on terror.

I agree with you on that also.

When is the world going to get tired of all of this BS and start eliminating the problem.

Start eliminating the problem?!?!! Have you been asleep the past three years?

Okay, Professor, why don't you just tell us how it's done. (See if you can do it without including the phrase "nuke Mecca.")

So in Chechneya, they're sunnis. And in Indonesia, they're...what? You mention the pakis as radicals. And the palies. And the Egyptians. And then we have Sudan.

In this case, the sick limb is the head of the beast. If you wish to advocate lopping off that sick limb, I'll agree! Then the whole miserable infection will evaporate like any other foul odor.

I'm talking about "moderates" in this country, who (with one or two tiny exceptions) were remarkably quiet after 9/11--that is

Everyone was remarkably quiet after 9/11. Doesn't this bother you? There was a nice post on another thread, about some demonstration in Minnesota (I think) that was diffused by the local officials with a lot of doublespeak. They even brought a (moderate I guess) Muslim woman to talk to them. I have no problem with anybody that's quiet. But I want every Wahhabi captured or contained in the desert.

What are you talking about? These are not "militants", they're terrorists. If Putin is "MUCH better oriented than our state department", how the hell does s*it like this go down? Apparently he's NOT killing the "millitants".

What do we know about the reformation process of primary religions? For all we know, some of them emerge from a cataclysmic event that demonstrates (in a relatively humane fashion) that the staid beliefs don't hold, that the faith is in something false.
