Senator Miller suggests a duel during combative TV interview
ALAN FRAM
Associated Press
NEW YORK - Democratic Sen. Zell Miller was tough on his own party's presidential nominee, but things got even hotter when the combative conservative all but challenged an interviewer to a duel.
Fresh off a keynote speech to the Republican National Convention that blistered John Kerry, the Georgia senator engaged in a raucous television interview with Chris Matthews that got increasingly rambunctious.
The host of MSNBC-TV's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" is known for an aggressive, rapid-fire interviewing style, and the two men interrupted each other several times during the program.
"I wish we lived in the day where you could challenge a person to a duel," the 72-year-old Miller angrily told Matthews, 58.
Miller was at the Madison Square Garden convention site and Matthews was at an MSNBC set several blocks away, so there was no chance of a physical confrontation. But at one point, the senator told Matthews, "I wish I was over there, where I could get a little closer up into your face."
Miller's comments came during an interview in which Matthews pressed the senator on barbs he launched during his convention speech against Kerry, the Massachusetts senator and Democratic presidential nominee.
Miller said no one has been "more wrong, more loudly, more often" than Kerry.
When Matthews said he wanted to ask about Kerry's war record, Miller said, "Are you going to shut up after you ask me? Or are you going to give me a chance to answer it?"
By Thursday morning, Miller had simmered down, but just a bit.
Appearing on "Imus in the Morning," Miller said a man his age should not be "coming to New York and getting involved in all this stuff. He ought to stay down in Young Harris" - the north Georgia town where he lives - "with his two yellow labs, Gus and Woodrow, and let the world go by."
His barrages, which brought the GOP delegates to their feet cheering, prompted sharp counterattacks from Democrats. Vice presidential candidate John Edwards said some of Miller's charges were "just false."
A lifelong Democrat and ex-Marine, Miller is retiring from the Senate in January.

Notice that AP makes no mention of Chrissy's treatment of Michelle Malkin.
zell is winning the "who would win the duel poll" on this site by a country mile.

chris matthews really needs to draw a few breaths and shut up for half a minute.
"Your hmbl. & obdnt. servant,
"Zell Miller"
No mention of the substantive points on which Miller made a fool of Mathews. Quote of Edwards saying Miller's charges were "false," without telling the charges or whether Edwards' statement had any basis in reality.
Ref: DRAW!!!
Matthews: Hey! Wait a se...
Zell: *BANG!!!*
Edwards is correct here. One of Millers charges were false. Kerry never even supported the use of spitwads by the US military.
The code duello was rough, but the single-shot aspect of it separated the men from the boys.

Thats because Zell is a straight shooter!
Matthews couldn't have shined the boots of either of the gentlemen involved in the Weehauken duel.
Ok Here is the deal:
I want to tell you some things about Zell.
These yankees need to understand that you DO NOT mess with mountain folk. I know. I lived in Atlanta until I turned 35 then I moved about 2 miles north of Zell's homeplace in the southern Appalachian MTNS. I know these folks and how they were raised and where they came from.
These are tough resilient enterprising people.
2. Zell Miller is very smart and savvy. I know this because I myself fought ferociously in the 90's at the Georgia statehouse trying to wrest control from the Democrats. He is one tough opponent and one I have to respect.
3. I saw this resolve displayed over all things his Prekindergarten program which I did not oppose but we objected to the curriculum. He stood up pointed his finger and said "If you come after me over PRE-K I'll wrap it around your neck and strangle you with it."
4.He is probably the most popular politician in the state of Georgia.
So when these yankee talkin heads come down and try and smear, they do so at their own peril. They are going to end up setting the Democratic party miles back in the state of Georgia. Which is fine by me.
"John has no plans to deploy spitballs in the war on terror. To say that he does is outrageous!
Someone tell Alan Framm that there are no ex-Marines.

He list The Great Escape as one of his favorite movies.
I have that flick on dvd.
Miller is still an Old Time Democrat but he is also a thinking rational man. He loves his country and is honest about Bush not Kerry being the man for the next 4 years. If it was pre 9/11 he still wouldn't like Kerry but he'd probably tow the party line.
His speech and his stand takes courage.
The AP doesn't say anything about Matthew's typical behavior of shouting down guests and not allowing them to get a word in edgewise. A deliberate attempt to get readers to draw a false inference about Miller. Typical of the partisan, lying press.
But only when dealing with conservative targets ... er, I mean ... guests.
i have been watching these "talking heads" during the RNC coverage and they ask the stupidest questions. All of htem. They are always trying to bring up something stupid to fill in the airwaves.
I would not be able to live with myself if i was a senseless blather-box (particularly a liberal one) for a living.
I don't even enjoy listening to o reily. However, if matt drudge still had a show i would watch him religiously.
