I hadn't seen this article yet posted on FR.....saw the Prez's speech on TV over an hour ago...a WARM reception by the VFW's there!

A few good pull quotes from the speech:

"And last September, while our troops were in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, I wanted to make sure they had the very best, so I proposed supplemental funding to support them in their mission. The legislation provided funding for body armor and vital equipment, hazard pay, health benefits, ammunition, fuel, and spare parts. The VFW strongly supported my request. I thank you for standing up for our troops. Your work on Capitol Hill paid off; after all, the funding received strong bipartisan support -- so strong that in the United States Senate, only 12 members voted against the funding, two of whom were my opponent and his running mate. (Applause.)

When pressed, he explained his vote -- "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it." (Laughter.) He went on to say he was proud of the vote, and the whole thing is a "complicated" matter. There's nothing complicated about supporting our troops in combat. (Applause.)

There's nothing "nuanced" about supporting our military. Whenever people listen to the French candidate, boy he never gets to the point or it comes out different. If we elect that flip-flopper, God forbid, our next President, we will all get killed. Its that simple and its only reason we need to re-elect President Bush to a secomd term in November.

I agree -- it'll be interesting to see if Kerry speaks before the VFW folk...and what their reaction(s) to him might be....'twas nice to see our Commander-In-Chief LEADING -- instead of the "ME TOO" Kerry going around giving speeches -- hoping to pull votes away from W by running on his "war record" (four highly uneventful, paltry months running from the enemy in Vietnam)....

What do you think will happen when Kerry speaks in front of the group. If the reaction is negative, how will it be reported by the MSM?

Kerry's scheduled as a performer. With the swift boat stuff out here, it might be interesting. I hope he goes with the sensitive stuff and the "In the UN We Trust" BS.

Part of the $87 Billion was $1.3 Billion for Veterans health care

http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040717-043458-6068r.

The winners of the nation's highest award for valor also hit hard at Kerry's record, citing the Massachusetts Democrat's as having voted, "against a $1.3 billion increase in veterans health care, skipped votes on concurrent receipt and voted against funding for our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq."

"While he talks a good game," they said, "Kerry's record shows he is out of the mainstream," citing as an example Kerry's opposition to a constitutional amendment banning desecration of the U.S. flag. Bush supports the amendment.

I concur -- also, when they tally up all those missed votes by Kerry (as he was out campaigning) on key issues...well...it'd be nice to see the you-know-what hit the fan.....

Every Vet worth their salt will give Kerry Jeers and boos when he addresses the VFW. Kerry has done more to hurt veterans in the country than any Senator on the hill.

"The Veterans of Foreign Wars have always stood up for our nation and those who wear the uniform"
What a crock. In the early 70's they didn't want to know about us. They thought we were a bunch of whiners. I won't argue with them about that, as they put up with a lot worse then us for a lot longer. But all we wanted was respect.
These folks won't even respond to my email.
All I asked them was what they thought of us being called rapists and murderers by Kerry.... No response.

No, they simply shouldn't applaud enthusiastically.

Senator Kerry is personally a poor candidate, but the American system and our election process is bigger than him.

We should always welcome opposing views politely inside this election process.

Just don't confuse politeness with an endorsement of such bizarre political views.

I concur -- W put the contrast between he and Lurch into VERY SIMPLE terms that anyone with a brain can understand -- without having to resort to the hate-mongering that Dems employ these days without abandon. Here's hoping that sound reasoning will prevail....more more uplifing news regarding the 2004 election, click on this link:

But, remember, Kerry has no agenda except he could "do it better, faster, and with less spending, while taxing the evil rich more to fund his socialist programs." Other than that, he has no agenda. No record in the senate. He is running on four months spent in Vietnam over 35 years ago. That is his record of service. 4 FREAKING MONTHS!

... excluding, of course, the several decades he spent in Cambodia, developing their written language, architecture and dance. :)
