Before the civil war there were a number of religious groups that predicted the end of the world.

Lately there has been the "Left Behind" Series

There have been date setters (who were wrong to do so obviously), but God's Word DOES tell of the events surrounding the end of this world.

As for Left Behind, it's a load of hooey that's not worth the paper it's printed on. But I will stick with the Bible.

Believers in the Da Vinci code are predicting a civilization killing asteroid in about 8 years.

I think we would have spotted it comming by now.

All that work, and they’ve electronically simulated just 14 neurons. That’s a far cry from uploading the 1011 neurons that make up the human brain.

Dims. Conservatives have 1011.

The last I heard, there were more people manning a McDonalds than looking for civilization destroying asteroids. I DO NOT have the same confidence you have. But it has nothing to do with that pile of garbage called the Da Vinci code.

Is Science Fiction About To Go Blind

Why? Has Sci-Fi been in the bathroom too long?

Correct on both points.

When the English puritans bungled away their Christian commonwealth, and suffered the consequences of that failure of the imagination, apocalyptic hysteria was in the air. In fact, Napier, a puritan mathematician, invented logarithms to aid his computations of prophetic scenarios!

In the last four years, according to the astronomy sites I visit, there were two "near-misses" from The Void. Not the earth-busters everyone hopes for (and they do), but ones that could force you to cancel your travel plans.

And as far as these "codex" books go: I was at Sam's not long past, and picked one up; the author's words were, "George Bush stole the election - it was predicted!"

I hid it behind "Two Towers". At least Professor Tolkien admitted he wrote fantasy.

Anyone who thinks this is close is STILL vastly underestimating both the computing power and the software engineering required to make this possible.

Modifying chimps to make them intelligent, or modifying humans to make them more intelligent (or docile, or whatever) is, however, much closer. I would not rule it out that someone is, in secret, tinkering with this today.

What about if it was made of a dark, non reflecting material, coming from the direction of the sun?
Asteroids are not like comets at all.

I like to point out that Nostradamas was really good at predicting "recent" events. Predicting the future is a whole different ball game.

HawkeyeLonewolf, I think Navy Patriot is admitting he just vacated the bathroom after an extended session "oiling the old baseball glove" ;-D

I thought you were HawkeyeLonewolf.

See? If you won't give me any more straight lines, I'll make one up.
