Lakeland was about 25 miles west of the eye, one short report indicated little major" damage there, but lots of "minor" problems.
Make sense?
Region and neighborhoods and whole buildings weren't destroyed (most likely, as far we know) but lots of trees down and power lines down and still raining/flooding hazards. Roof damaged, signs down etc almost certainly.
but the storm is past them now.

Sounds like a low cat 3 hurricane. Trees down like crazy, some flooding, general mess. Houses don't get blown apart in a cat 3. Cat 5, apparently yes.
