That's exactly what I've thought for a long time, and couldn't figure out why it has never been mentioned. I guarantee you that the people who protect the President told him to sit there for a few minutes until they could get ready to take him where he needed to be. At that point, they didn't know WHAT they were dealing with, they couldn't know that armed gunmen weren't going to storm that school or bomb it, could they?
