I was surprised to notice the depths of the hero worship

Stepping in here.....you MUST not look at this as hero worship!!! I know that I for one, am just flat out RELIEVED to not have to cringe each time the news comes on, having to RUSH to turn it off so my young grandson doesn't hear inappropriate things, as SO often happened when your man, Clinton was in office.

We're just PLEASED that ADULTS are in charge. I honestly don't know a single person on FR who WORSHIPS the man.

Yeah BG, you're right. Now if we could get rid of the Michael Jackson and Kobe Bryant stories we' be getting somewhere...

And isn't it refreshing that with the caliber of people Pres. Bush has working in the White House now, no memo was needed to remind the ladies...and I use the term VERY loosely...to wear panties to work??

Agreed! What some call worship, I call a thankful appreciation that somebody is now in office who respects that office and also reflects our values. President George W. Bush isn't perfect, but he doesn't pretend to be.

That's not "hero worship", Mr. Perlstein. It's just a collective sigh of relief we have someone w/brass cojones and a strong sense of "right" in the White House. He leads. Lincoln was hated - HATED - in the north. But he did what he had to. Only as an example, which you already know but is relevant, the Civil War did not start out as a fight against slavery but became one. We have ended the regime of a butcher in Iraq, who would have been followed by his equally evil sons at his death. You know about them, I'm sure. Iraq is not pretty right now, but neither was Germany or France (which we helped liberate, and aren't they the greatful nation?). Give Iraq the time, they will be FREE to practice their religion and have "regular" lives, and they're on their way now even as we speak. Maybe even one like you have where you can write whatever you believe, right or wrong, and not have your hands cut off or your children raped in front of you if the Dictator doesn't agree. Your world is not one I ever want to experience. I hope I never do.

You gotta it Gramma. How refreshing to be able to talk to my kids about President Bush rather than explaing oral sex to my kids when speaking of President Clinton. LOL

One thing liberals such as Mr. Perlstein don't get is, most conservatives are fairly religious. This is a generalization I know, but I myself am fairly religious and would feel really uncomfortable worshiping another human being. That old Commandment about putting other things ahead of God! Since a lot of those on the left don't have this frame of reference, they have a hard time understanding, plain old respect and admiration for an authority figure. The left has a hard time with authority, because they don't really want to grow up. The Baby-Boom Legacy rears it's ugly head.

I would ask Rick if he feels that religion is more of an influence on conservative thought as opposed to liberal thought.
