Actually, it didn't work all that well.

If you had asked a citizen of Japan or Nagasaki in late August if they wanted to keep fighting the Americans I promise you that you would have heard a large NO.

I can't believe that you can't tell the difference between what the citizens want and the army will do.

They only stopped fighting because the Emperor said no more (and he was a god)... That's it. If the Emperor had not commented the war would have continued because the military was determined to see it through to the end - even if the end meant the destruction of Japan.
