Georgia Right to Life PAC Censures Johnny Isakson for “Pro-Choice” Vote

On May 19, 2004 the U.S. House of Representatives voted against a proposal to allow women to choose an abortion in military facilities at their own expense. Current pro-life law prohibits the use of military facilities for abortions. The policy began as an executive order from the Bush administration in the early 1990s and eventually became law in 1996. President Clinton allowed abortions in military facilities from 1993 to 1996 prior to Congress adopting the pro-life law.

“Last night’s vote on the Davis of California Amendment to H.R. 4200 was the closest thing to a pure vote on Roe v Wade in recent U.S. House history, and U.S. Representative Johnny Isakson voted ‘pro-choice,’” says Georgia Right to Life PAC Director Dan Becker. “The amendment had little to do with federal funding of abortion” says Becker, “and focused clearly on the issue of ‘choice’ addressed by Roe v Wade. Private funding of abortion in taxpayer funded facilities was the issue, and our House, in a very narrow vote 202-221, voted rightly to prevent such use.”

Becker noted that, “Congressman Isakson was the only Georgia Republican to vote for abortions at government facilities. Isakson’s vote was even more pro-abortion than Democrat Congressman Jim Marshall, who voted to oppose abortions on government property. This will go far to dispel the myth among many in the conservative movement that Isakson is truly moving our way on pro-life issues. It is absolutely clear from this vote that should Roe v Wade be put before Congress tomorrow, Isakson would vote pro-choice!” says Becker.

“We are not alone in our assessment of the import of this vote,” says Becker, “Today, National Right to Life PAC, issued their unqualified endorsement of Congressman Mac Collins for U.S. Senate, signaling by its release, what would indicate to me, a deep concern over the outcome of this Senate race.”

“We commend Congressmen Mac Collins, Max Burns, Nathan Deal, Phil Gingrey, John Linder, and Jim Marshall who upheld the current government policy restricting the use of taxpayer funded facilities to allow abortions.”

If conservatives thought Isakson was seeing the light on abortion, think again. He voted yesterday to allow abortions in military hospitals. His weak excuse was so servicewomen could have the same rights as women here. But if he were truly pro-life as his supporters claim, he would be glad to join with other congressmen in working to protect as many unborn as possible.

On the other hand, Congressman Mac Collins has a long voting record of 100% support for protecting the unborn.

Isakson decided he needed the newspapers and TV stations more than he needed the pro-lifers. He decided that in 1996 too, when he was booted out of the Republican primary for the Senate. Idiot.
