CBS could have actually compromised any criminal prosecutions of those involved by airing those photos.
These photos should have been kept by the legal or prosecuting section of the military that was bringing charges against these people. They are evidence in criminal cases and dissemination of them is illegal I believe. For them to be shared with anyone outside of that department would be tatamount to violating the rights of the defendents and could effect the outcome of any disciplinary hearings held.
