FR DNS problems...
today

DNS lookups failing for FR here - no such host. Apparently I'm not the only one, judging from a glance at the Yahoo FR board. Dunno if it's my ISP (Verizon) or what, but I had to manually edit the hosts file to get here. Presumably, if you can post, you're not having this problem, but there are more than a few people who can't post right now because of it...

missed words:
It is located on your hard-drive: C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc (or substitute windows instead of winnt)

Make sure you save it as "hosts" with no extension. Notepad defaults to saving it as "hosts.txt", but that won't work - it has to be just plain "hosts". Anyway, that works just fine as a temporary fix - that's how I'm here. Of course, if you didn't already know how to do that, you probably can't get to FR to read about it at the moment ;)
So anyone with this problem who doesn't know about the Yahoo board is sitting in the dark right now. Plus, people trying to find FR for the very first time will fail as well, with no idea why or how to work around it. Plus that will break if/when FR changes IP addresses. And so forth, so hopefully this will be resolved - get it? ;) - soon.

Found the hosts file tip on yahoo and it worked perfectly for me.

Hey, remember that virus link someone troll put on the thread during the live coverage of the 9-11 hearings, the first day? Did you click on that? Just wondering.

I had the problem and added (on a line by itself)
209.157.64.200 www.freerepublic.com
to my Hosts file, which fixed it. I had had the hosts file hardcoded in Windows 98, but this is the first time it became necessary in XP.
Something went screwy with DNSlookup for FR.

To a stumbling bloke like me who read the Yahoo host edit instructions and managed to make it work, what happens when FR changes its DNS? Will we again be unable to log onto FR?

Yes, you are absolutely right. I remembered about the yahoo group and searched for it to find the advise that was there of course. 15 minutes of withdrawal were hard :))

Same here in South Carolina. I had to fix the hosts to get here. What's going on?

I wonder if this has anything to do w/ that VIRIUS link that was dropped into the LIVE thread yesterday?

If I had to guess, I would say it is something with the registrar. If ya do a WHOIS on Freerepublic.com, the registrar is gkg.net, and is says the status of the domain is "INACTIVE". Why it is, I have no idea, but this is more than likely the problem. Jim should contact GKG.net.

It worked for me too. After FR comes back up we'll have to remove the file from the hosts directory right?
Thanks for posting the info, I was starting to have major withdrawal.
And thanks gmbeahan

I can get in (slowwwwwwwlllllyyyyy) using the AOL (9.0) browser, but not using Mozilla which usually works much faster.

yes, remove this entry. Not the whole file. Otherwise, if the IP address changes, you won't be able to connect, unless you again manually will change the record.

It likely has everything to do with the inactive status at GKG.net.. Someone's pulling a fast one, and my guess is that they're sniggering over at dummy land. Ahh, yes, nothing like a liberal to ensure that free speech means nothing to anyone else.
