Thin women more likely to give birth to girls

Thin women are more likely to give birth to girls than boys, according to research carried out by an Italian scientist.

Angelo Gagnacci, from the Polyclinic in Modena, researched around 10,000 births and found a woman's weight could influence the sex of the child.

He said his research showed that there was a higher chance that women who weighed less than eight and a half stones before falling pregnant would give birth to a girl.

For every 100 girls born to women under this weight there were only 98 boys. Women who weighed more than 54 kilos were more likely to bear a son, with 110 boys born compared to 100 girls.

Recent research conducted by American scientists found a similar phenomenon in animals, where female animals that had gone through a period of hunger or drought were also found to give birth more to female young than male.

Scientists believe that the reason could be that boy babies tended to be bigger which would make them harder for smaller women to give birth to.

Cagnacci also found that other factors such as the time of year could affect a child's gender.

"The chances of giving birth to a girl are increased if the baby is conceived in the months between March and May," said Cagnacci, adding that in return babies conceived in the autumn were more likely to be boys.

Umm... I thought the "decision" was made by the individual spermatozoa.

BS My grandmother was thin and had two sons. My sister is thin and had two sons. I was thin when I was having my kids and I had two sons and one daughter. I look around my neighborhood and see that this notion is 100% pure BS. No offense to Billorites, you just posted it, someone else spouted it. Plus, a lot of plump women have a lot of daughters.

You are RIGHT. There are some studies that suggest that there are different foods you can eat before pregnancy that could influence which gender your future baby will be. And Different douches. Baking soda if you want sons, vinegar if you want daughters. My mother used vinegar and had three daughters. I tried to foods thing and it worked for me. Coindidence maybe!

For every 100 girls born to women under this weight there were only 98 boys.

Hardly a significant result. That could have happened by mere chance.

Apparently nature has found a way to produce more females when mortality
rises, as more females would be needed for the preservation of a species.

Well, I am expecting a baby in August. Maybe I won't even bother with the sonogram. I can look at myself in the mirror and know.... it is a boy!!!

Very misleading in this context. This would make it an issue of "delivery" not "conception."

That's a damn good point, maybe male embryos are less likely to implant in thinner women for some reason? I must admit, it makes sense as an adaption (not the same as saying that it actually happens of course). A single male can impregnate many females so having lots of males around is a luxury which in times of starvation can be dispensed with.

There's lots of evidence that suggests males fetuses are less viable than female. The rate of spontaneous miscarriages is higher among male fetuses for reasons that aren't fully understood.

I've always heard that if you drink diet Dr. Pepper and sing a medley of Oak Ridge Boys songs you'd conceive a boy.

And thin women are more likely to weigh less (than fat women). Gads, and the day is just starting.

I agree with the BS. I was thin when I conceived each of my sons. I was at my heaviest when I conceived my only daughter.
