I think that lesbianism is much more politicized than male homosexuality. I don't think too many men "go gay" in order to "make a statement" about the world, themselves or whatever. The same cannot be said for lesbians. I venture that while most men who are homosexual just are (and I don't mean to imply they are born that way, just that it is not an overt choice on their part) many, many women have been turned to lesbianism via radical feminism and a more active recruitment ethos among lesbians.

This is my impression, I certainly can't prove it. But hey, I grew up in NYC and my own brother was gay (he died, that's why I say was) so I'm pretty sophisticated and not just talking out of my elbow.
