I am from New Mexico. A state that had many NG troops on the Bataan death march. Regardless of what honorable service Guard Units gave in other conflicts the Guard and Reserves were used by people seeking to evade actual service during Vietnam.
Only the rich and well connected could get into to the Guard. I entered the Military (was drafted) from Indiana in 1967. There was a waiting list of 20,000 in that state alone waiting to get into the NG. Only the rich and well connected got the slots. Normal folks need not apply.
I was there. That was what happened. Anyone who was drafted at that time can tell you the straight facts and they are as I state. During Vietnam the NG and Reserves were the Rich guy's Draft Dodge. Only people who couldn't get in to the Guard or Reserves went to Canada.
How in the Hell can people forget that in such a short time? OH! Wait a minute!! That was 35 years ago. Most of the people up this late were still babies then! Some still are.

I've no doubt that this is true, and that's why the drumbeat about President Bush's service keeps on keepin' on.
One of my husband's oldest friends went into the National Guard and he was not rich or famous, nor was he or his family well connected.
OTOH,my husband, a white male, who was going to college but was also working, WAS DRAFTED! Something else that supposedly never ever happened, according to Libs/anti-war types. And so, he joined the Air Force, instead and was active duty for the CUBAN MISSLES CRISIS and the early part of Nam!
You imagine that you know so much. You actually only know DEM/LIBERAL PROPAGANDA, which you've swallowed as whole cloth and have regurgitated onto this thread.
You can salute that loser all day and all night, I never will, I didn't serve in Vitnam but two in my family did and John Kerry and his Marxist friends like Jane Fonda shit on them both.
