OK, diotima, time for a little bitter humor from a conservative who's been involved with campaigning.
It's been said that one conservative does the work of ten.
Question: Why does one conservative do the work of ten on a general election campaign?
Answer: Because the other nine conservatives didn't bother to show up.
Alot of truth to that.
Of course, the converse is that 'moderates' usually consider it sufficient to write a check.
