(Note: National Rifle Association alerts 4 million members that hunting in Montana, Wyoming, & Idaho has been destroyed by wolves. Many thanks to John Zent, Editor of NRA’s American Hunter, and to Chuck Adams, for an honest article and for permission to post and share it. Those that still think wolves are warm and fuzzy overgrown housepets or attach a romance/mystique to them -- get ready for those pipe dreams to go up in smoke.)

I'd NEVER poison those critters. Poison does not leave ballistic traces, and if you were to use a slow poison they would most likely wander off your property before dying. So don't poison those wolves.

Don't do it.

Not that I or anyone I know would ever think of doing such a thing, but HOW do people do it? Just for info purposes only, please, as I may not be able to sleep at night not knowing what methods such mean people use...

Hey, Sunsong, can't wait to hear you way in after reading this.
The article has too many facts and too much common sense, but I'm sure you'll find a "reasonable" response.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to direct you to Google. Alternatively, there are some old books on vermin control that you might consult. I'd like to be more explicit, but some might take it wrongly.

I am unimpressed with the article. How melodramatic can you get?

Did you think that I would be shocked that wolves are predators? As the article says, everything will balance out in time. The elk herds wil go down and then the wolf population will go down too and then the elk population will increase. I'm surprised that someone as knowledgable as you wouldn't have already pointed out that out :-)

You want to make sure to be careful with antifreeze as it could hurt the poor things.

Also make sure no stray dogs with distemper or parvo are around the wolf pack either. The poor wolves might catch the diseases and it could decimate them.

I will be very careful when I am out viewing the beautiful creatures.

Too bad its so hard too view one, instead all we see is the blood and gore from what they have killed.

"As the article says, everything will balance out in time."

Don't know if you were reading the same article, but it will only "balance out" when we start managing/eliminating the wilves. Nature will not balance it out...the wolves will destriy all other wildlife if they are gone unchecked.

Lock and load time!

"Kyran Kunkel, scientific researcher for the Turner Endangered Species Fund, confirms the bleak prospects for adding gray wolves to the wildlife mix. Kunkel’s studies show that after reintroduction of wolves, deer and elk numbers decline and so does hunter success. Cougars starve, wolves kill each other, and wolf reproduction rates go down. Deer and elk populations grow slowly, wolf numbers increase, and the whole vicious cycle repeats itself"

This is what I was referring to. Perhaps you skimmed that part :-)

It seems to me that the fringe right-wing wants to have its own form of "social engineering". It seems to me that the extreme far right wants to *control* federal lands and turn them into money making parcels for themselves. What I'm hearing and reading is that the fringe groups want to use federal lands either to graze cattle or sheep or to have unnaturally large herds of *game* so that they can make money off of them.

And what I'm also hearing and reading is that the fringe right is willing to do *anything* to get their way. You can see that on this thread where illegality is encouraged and one of the most savage means of killing is condonned. The extreme right has no moral authority, imo. Here are people who truly lack character trying to tell others how they should live their lives.

RRRRooooooooooorroooroooorooooooorrroooorrorooorroooo...

"The only tracks in the fresh snow were those of gray wolves. Hoppe also had a knot in his gut. Nonresident hunting clients were due to arrive tomorrow, and there were no elk to be found."Generally the elk have gone down to the meadows by the time the snow falls. I can remember times when elk lay dead along both sides of the hwys for hundreds of miles, because of starvation. The last thread I saw one of the complaints were for extended hunting seasons!

Also from the author, later in the article.

""Wolf populations are having no significant effect on big game populations," this Montana-based biologist says. "There may be pockets where wolves are having an effect on wildlife, but there’s also a drought going on in the West that’s having a major effect. "

*****

"The only tracks in the fresh snow were those of gray wolves. Hoppe also had a knot in his gut. Nonresident hunting clients were due to arrive tomorrow, and there were no elk to be found."

Let's appeal to the emotions now. After all lambs are people too. BTW, wolves kill fast and eat. It's not a game to them like it is with dogs.

""They don’t seem to have a fear of man," Keranen says....Even shining a spotlight or shooting a gun in the air was considered illegal "wolf harassment.""

" What yoou ahve here folks is a lack of balance and perception. Farms don't belong to the wolves and they are tresspassing, because they know the liberals are in charge. The fact is that they are dangerous and need to be handled. They are smart animals and aren't hard to control. wolf harrassment my butt. Shooting them should be allowed in such cases, just as when any of several animals raid my livestock. I don't have to kill everything that walks in the woods, even the 'coons that are the really dumb ones that never learn from a lesson. Wolves and coyotes do and they behave themselves afterward.

"Within the next five years, I believe American hunters will be able to legally bag a wolf in the West." "

The folks that live there ought to be able to control their operations.

" Who are you going to blame for dead elk?"

What a dumb question- Bush.

The article sucks. It's a rammbling attempt to whine by someone that doesn't know what they're talking about.
