Smallpox vaccines were routinely given as part of infant immunizations in Cairo in the late 1980's. I've got living proof sitting on the couch watching TV :)

They didn't use live smallpox virus for the vaccines so there wasn't any danger of creating a human carrier state. I will have to research the virus they used - it was related but was attenuated (weakened) so it was safe in people who were not immunocompromised.

A variant of the smallpox virus may still be alive and active in the world, causing human disease and deaths. The claim that smallpox has been eliminated is contradicted by numerous reports of pox virus transmission in Africa today. This disease has been named human monkeypox because the virus resembles a pox virus found in captive monkeys in 1958 (Mukinda et al., 1996). Human monkeypox exists in rainforest villages of central and western Africa, where it is readily transferred through person-to-person contact. It causes the same symptoms as smallpox, and differs from smallpox virus only in its protein structure, a difference of a few nucleotide sequences. I'd like to know who/what $$$ is behind the Foundation for health choice. Notice it smeared Jenner, the father of vaccination right off the bat.

If smallpox hits here I have no qualms about healthy folks getting vaccinated and I would want my kids vaccinated unless it was medically contraindicated.
