Any diet that discourages the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is ridiculous in my opinion.

Any diet that discourages the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is ridiculous in my opinionAtkins does NOT discourage the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, just not the high-glycemic ones.
We eat all kinds of berries, cantaloupe, peaches, kiwi, and vast quantities of vegetables barring potatoes.
We also enjoy the low sugar cranberry juice put out by Ocean Spray. It's just made with Splenda instead of sugar.

I can't speak for the South Beach diet, but the Atkins diet does not prohibit fresh fruits or veggies. Heck, I'm on Atkins, and am living on a 50% salad diet (mind you, salad with MEAT. . . .). We just keep away from high-sugar/high-starch beyond a certain point, depending on where you are in the diet (induction, continuing loss, maintenance)
