Homosexual community acknowledges it is facing consequences of deviant sexual behavior.
The homosexual community may finally be coming to terms with the consequences of its sexual excesses. In a stunning admission, a Seattle AIDS organization published a manifesto that asks gay men to take responsibility for the spread of the disease.
Although the document concludes that condom use is the ultimate answer to preventing the spread of AIDS, statements like "men must act against the behaviors . . . responsible for the increased spread of (the) disease" signal an awareness of the dangers of the lifestyle.
"It's very contentious in the community because of that," said Quinten Welch, the author of the report. "But one of the reasons we put it out there was to start having these discussions and make people aware."
Welch added that his report is the first honest look within the gay community at the causes of the disease. It has even prompted an examination of so-called "safe sex."
"Nothing is 100 percent effective," he said. "Abstinence should always be a part of anyone's idea of how to maintain safer sex."
The manifesto comes as a welcome surprise to those reaching out to the gay community. Randy Thomas of Exodus International called it a significant step.
"Its about time that the community, the gay community, has come out of denial about how serious HIV is and their responsibility in it," he explained.
But he added that the ultimate answer to the disease is a restored relationship with God. And for that to happen, the church is going to have to reach out.
"The people of God," he said, "need to act like the people of God towards people who have HIV and become servants and love unconditionally."
Statistics show that almost half a million people have died of AIDS in the United States.
