But it is in the matter of female genital mutilation that Islam allows its women to be most grievously abused. The process involves cutting away the girl's labia and clitoris and sewing up the vulva till only a small hole is left for the passage of menstrual blood. This operation is performed not by surgeons but by local peasants, without anaesthetics. Often the perpetrators are members of the victim's own family. The operation often takes place in unhygienic conditions giving rise to infections from which death sometimes results.

The figures are alarming. The World Health Organisation estimates that some 100 million Muslim women who are alive today are mutilated in this way and that each year a further two million Muslim girls are added to the total. This thus constitutes an unacknowledged Crime Against Humanity
