Hwy 38 from the valley to Big Bear is the only road into and out of the Mountains was the only road that I didn't grip my steering wheel all the time. Used to take my kids up to Big Bear in the summer from Yucaipa and in winter to the snow. I hated the route up to Arrowhead from SB -- my hands would be sore if I drove that route -- and I always drove because I couldn't stand to be a passenger and have very little road on my side as we drove up! Hwy 38 is through mostly forest with only a few scarey places. The other two seemed scarey most of the time!

Do you remember that lovely rock fence on the lower facing side of the mountain? It was after you came up the long, steep road. I think Christmas Village was around there.

I rarely took that way, except when Big Bear was on fire about six years ago.

Folks could go up to Sugarloaf if they are afraid.

Just emailed an old friend in Big Bear. They never had cable when I was there, but we'll see. If she gets an email off to me, I'll let everyone know what she knows.
