'Steve Harvey Show' Actor Shot To Death Santana Played Romeo On Show
POSTED: 8:33 a.m. EST November 11, 2002 UPDATED: 11:54 a.m. EST November 11, 2002
The man who played Romeo Santana -- a showboat student on "The Steve Harvey Show"-- was shot to death over the weekend.
Police say Merlin Santana was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car early Saturday morning in South Central Los Angeles when at least one person came up and fired.
The driver wasn't hurt. He drove off and flagged down police. Paramedics responded but Santana was dead at the scene.
Santana was 26.
His performances won him nominations for the NAACP Image Awards and the ALMA Awards -- which honor Hispanic performers.
One of Santana's earliest roles was that of Stanley -- a young suitor of Rudy Huxtable on the hit television series "The Cosby Show."
Santana also had guest appearances on several television shows, including "Major Dad," "Moesha" and "Sister, Sister."
But I'll assume that was the case untill/ IF further evidence surfaces......
RIP
The driver wasn't hurt.
It sounds to me like he screwed somebody over on a drug deal. For a guy that rich to be hanging out in South Central LA, I doubt he was there to scope out a good restaurant or buy records. He got killed because of something he was into.
This is really late Friday night. I also believe some kind of illegal activity, most likely drugs.
That's a ridiculous assumption bordering on racist. Do you know anything about South Central LA? Do you live in LA or the surrounding area? Because you know plenty of people do, black, white, and mexican. Some of those people even have friends, neighbors, and relatives and they might actually travel to South Central to visit them.
A friend's mother lives there. It is certainly comforting to know that if I traveled to South Central to visit my friend or his mother, and became the victim of a drive-by shooting, robbery, or other random act of violence, I would be villified by my fellow FREEpers as a drug user/dealer before the casket was lowered. The sickening implication being my actions somehow warranted death.
Santana, 26, was killed early Saturday in South Los Angeles, police spokeswoman Lucy Diaz said.
He was sitting in the passenger seat shortly after 2:30 a.m. when at least one person approached the car and fired, Lt. Clay Farrell said.
The driver escaped injury, drove off and flagged down police. Paramedics responded but Santana was pronounced dead at the scene, Farrell said.
No arrests were immediately made and investigators had not determined a motive for the attack.
The New York-born Santana had a recurring role on The Steve Harvey Show , playing Romeo Santana. The role won him nominations for NAACP Image Awards and ALMA Awards, which honor Hispanic performers.
One of his earliest roles was as Stanley, the faithful admirer of Rudy Huxtable on the hit series The Cosby Show.
He also had guest appearances on several television shows, including Major Dad, Moesha and Sister, Sister.
He later joined the casts of Getting By and the short-lived James Earl Jones drama Under One Roof.

South Central L.A., 2:30 A.M. Nothing suspicious here. I'm sure he was visiting his grandmother and handing out sour candy to the neighborhood kids.
This crime will probably never be solved. There's no way that the driver will ever admit what he was doing there at 2:30 A.M. He was more than likely in on the killing. Otherwise, they'd both be dead.
Then you should know plenty of hard-working people live there in single nice family homes. It is a popular misconception that this is the worst (most dangerous) place in southern California to live. I can name plenty of places more blighted and dangerous in so. cali. Lesse: North Hollywood, Compton, Watts, Rialto, Baldwin Park, East LA, Pico-Union. It's all relative.

While I agree with what you are saying, you'll have a hard time convincing me that these two places are NOT in South Central LA.
