Based on Dick Riordan's performance during the primary, I think you meant to ask, "Can you imagine what Davis would be doing to Riordan at this point?"

I can't speak for everybody, only for myself, but I didn't vote for Bill Simon because Gray Davis ran attack ads against Dick Riordan. I couldn't possibly care less what that amoral, self-obsessed
megalomaniac wanted me to do. I voted for Simon because he spent his primary time running for governor and did a decent job of it, and Riordan squandered his time, his lead in the polls and the assistance he got from the Bush White House by running against his own party. I already knew Riordan was no Ronald Reagan either in his politics or his prowess at public speaking, but the man made his name and his fortune making deals and bringing people together and I figured he'd make more of an effort to do that with conservatives during the primary. Oops. Didn't happen, and as a result, he didn't win. The Davis ads might have hurt Riordan a little, but nowhere as badly as he hurt himself.

I completely agree with you. Riordan went into the primary thinking he had already won. Also, Davis never intended for Riordan to lose the primary -- he didn't think it was possible. Davis just wanted to soften him up. The early press quotes from Garry South say just that -- they never expected him to lose, they were doing to Riordan what Wilson did to Kathleen Brown in the 1994 primary. But the press (and Davis) re-wrote history, saying they PLANNED this all along. B*llsh*t.

the Simon-Davis race is neck-and-neck. Really. We can't let the Democrats defeat us with their attitude today, we have an excellent chance. Simon is the underdog, he had an uphill battle the entire way, was outspent 7-to-1, and the CRP did little to help him -- and did a lot behind the scenes to hurt him. Yet, we're within a couple points, and the election is tomorrow. We can do it. GO SIMON!

I agree with you to a point - but it's hard for me to believe that Riodan wouldn't be doing better against Davis now than Simon is. Of course, who knew Simon would be so adept at shooting himself in the foot...
