Regarding your article: "Fifty Thousand Current and Former Smokers Needed For National Lung Screening Trial"

I've read your call for "Fifty Thousand Current and Former Smokers Needed For National Lung Screening Trial."  That will be the day when I hand my body over to you!  I trust any anti-smoker organization as far as I can throw a battleship.  And most smokers feel the same way.

You've funded and /or backed anti-smoker cells that have directed doctors to harass smokers that has resulted in smokers not going to the doctor, even though they're more than entitled since they pay so much more than anyone else and far beyond.  Anti-smoker orgs. have manipulated scientific studies for the sake of lining their pockets with those thirty pieces of silver; basically stealing money from smokers and then telling the world you're concerned with our health; you couldn't care less about our health.  The only health antis are concerned with is the wealth of their pockets!  Exploited smokers.  Extorted wealth.

You've seen to it that smokers a socially unexceptable and considered fourth class diseased citizens who do not deserve to live on the same planet with everyone else.  The funding and backing that you've given these antis has made it possible for them to have our children taken away from us because we smoke, they've seen to it that we're denied employment; housing and MEDICAL CARE, deprived us of the right of free association, trying to keep us from our rightful pursuit of happiness by banning us from restaurants and other establishments offering forms of relaxation and entertainment.  You've made it possible to stop smokers from flying and staying at their favorite vacation spot and worst of all; you've turned our children against us by showing them pig lungs and telling them it was a cancerous smokers lung, telling them that their parents are going to die because they smoke (you care at all about what this does to a child?  It's frightening to them!) and teaching them hatred of smokers in their schools without their parents knowledge.

And you want smokers to bring their bodies in to you for a trial?  That would be like sending any American into an al Qaeda camp; the camp of the enemy.  An enemy that wants to dispose of us.  What is the saying about the spider inviting the fly?  You actually expect us to believe you.  I think any smoker who would volunteer for your "Trial" has to be out of their mind or so very well brainwashed that they are bad Americans because they smoke.  You want to use us as guinea pigs and at the very least we would be harassed the same as we are when we go to the doctors office; that's made very clear in your article.  At worse.....well who knows ("...spiral computerized tomography ("CT or chest X-ray"); lets just say I'd never let you give me a shot of any kind, let alone take a lung biopsy (a potentially risky procedure*) because YOU say there are abnormalities.

I'm, by far, not the only smoker who feels this way.  Congratulations!

Carol
California

Isn't this wonderful! NOT! I sure wish all the smokers would pull up the shades and see what is really happening here.

Participants in NLST will receive lung cancer screenings free of charge. Men and women can participate in NLST if they meet the following requirements:
* Are current or former smokers ages 55 to 74
* Have never had lung cancer and have not had any cancer within the last five years (except some skin cancers or in situ cancers)

The results will be rigged.
Isn't this the age when most people contract lung cancer ANYWAY? Whether they are smokers or not?

Speaking as an unrepentant smoker (though I wish to quit), please don't disregard the value of getting a lung screening. I lost my best friend to LC in May. He was 35 years old.

I'm not saying you should participate in this, but doing it independently is an excellent idea.

Excactly, but then thats how they scew the numbers, years ago it was said that one out of three people would get cancer of one kind or another in their lifetime.

Mr. Bird, two things
#1. - If you are an unrepentent smoker why do you wish to quit? If you want to you can. All it takes is will power.
#2. - I DON'T discoumt lung screening. I have a full physical once a year including a chest x-ray.

I would sooner allow medical experimentation by a mad scientist on my body than allow these anti-smoker organizations to get even a PEEK at my little toe.

The state has decided that tobacco and related health costs are not a useful expenditure of funds. They should be able to outlaw tobacco in about 10 years if the media plays along.

Oh pluuuuuese! They have their hooks in us so deep now, do you actually think I would even let the ACS look at me? No way! Thank you!

Then they will do away with their lifestyles with the big funding? I really wonder, steve, if they are willing to go that far. Give up all that money!

Save lives, not Big Tobacco!
Without Big Tobacco, millions of antis lives wouldn't be worth a plug nickle; Big Tobacco is where their money comes from!

Errr....don't look now, but the ACS is not the only organization that can give you a damned X-Ray or CT scan.

I thought it may be a poor choice of words. What I mean is I don't feel guilty, and certainly think everyone should have the right to smoke. I'd like to quit for both the health and financial benefits. My wife succeeded, and I'm getting close.

Or, "if you don't have lung cancer now, we'll exposed you to radiation until you do." Right up there with mamography. It's all about $. Last statistic I remember reading about mamography was that it found less than .01% of all breast cancers, yet it's practically forced on women. Who benefits from this stuff? Not the individual.

Good for you! Keep trying. I've smoked almost 20 years, minus a few years here and there where I managed to quit. I'm hoping this time is the last time I have to quit. 96 hours since my last half-smoke.

Switched to ultra lights a few years ago, cut down to half a pack a day a couple years ago, then started shaving off a smoke a day every month untill I got down to 2, then I started smoking half-smokes, cut them down to 2 last week, and eliminated all last Sunday. I'm doing OK, but it is a struggle at times.

No gum or patches for me.

I'm like Joe. I get a complete physical yearly. So far so good. :)

Your so right. Doctor insists I have one every year. My last one was in 1999. I keep postponing them. I know this might not be smart, but every time I turn it around, it's time again. And it's expensive! Even with insurance, we still have to pay so much of it. But year after year after year. I get so tired of it!

That's great! My Doctor told me they don't work anyway. Just another crutch with a high price tag.

But for those who do not wish to quit, but do not want to pay into the state coffers any longer:

You are cutting off your nose to spite your face, you ingrate. These people are only trying to help you, and here you are insulting them in the most abusive language.

CT screening has the potential to save many smokers' lives. It can see tumors as small as a few millimeters, while they are still curable. The CT is much more sensitive than a regular chest X-ray; by the time a tumor can be seen on chest x-ray it has often spread elsewhere in the body.

If you don't want to participate in the research, suit yourself. It's the kind of stupidity I would expect from a drug addict who let himself get hooked on the weed.

Doctors don't give liver transplants to alcoholics or IV drug abusers. Why should they lift a finger to treat smokers, who are just as bad? Especially when their patients have the attitude you display here?

If I were the director of the NIH or the NCS, I would just cut off all research on lung cancer. Like AIDS, it is almost always a self-inflicted disease. There are many other innocent victims of disease on whom to spend our precious research dollars.

Tobacco-hooked drug addicts dying slow, painful deaths, drowning in a froth of their own blood, should blame their own foolish weak selves for their illness. Since they seem incapable of this, I would just as soon they blame paranoid ranters like you for stifling the research, instead of insulting the researchers who are just trying to help them.

She can't help it. There's nothing more important in their lives than cigarettes. When smoking is banned in public places they have to stay home and grovel because they fear leaving the house and not being able to selfishly blow smoke in other patrons faces.
