Thursday Aug. 1, 2002; 10:14 a.m. EDT IRS-gate Backfires on Gray Davis It looks like the attempt by Clinton appointees at the IRS to smear California GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon by leaking confidential information from his tax return has backfired, according to the latest statewide survey released Wednesday. A SurveyUSA poll of 861 likely voters shows Simon pulling ahead of incumbent Democrat Gov. Gray Davis with a slim 47-45 percent lead, the Washington Times reports. Simon's surge comes despite a Davis campaign warchest that dwarfs his own and a prominent Davis endorsement from the wildly popular (in California) Sen. Hillary Clinton. Her handpicked IRS Commissioner Charles Rossotti still reigns at the agency, despite recently uncovered evidence that he may have helped instigate politically motivated audits. Last week Landmark Legal Foundation President Mark Levin told the Wall Street Journal that the IRS leaks against Simon, which revealed he had participated in a controversial tax shelter, may have been illegal. Levin has requested that a Justice Department probe into those responsible. On Sunday Levin pounded away at the IRS-gate story, which most of the press has ignored, from his microphone at WABC Radio in New York. "Am I the only one who cares about this?" he railed. Judging from the SurveyUSA results, Levin apparently has his answer. The SurveyUSA poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. He is going up in the polls while spending none of his money, while Davis is pounding away, and going down.
When your opponent is self-destructing, why get in the way?
Simon has gone from -15 (if you believe the field poll) to +2 in a few months, by running an "enemic campaign."
Exactly my thinking .. Davis has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Simon and has done nothing but sink lower in the polls.
This "Civil Judgement" is Davis final chance at a haymaker. If Simon survives this and is still even or cvery close -- then all he has to do is let Grayout punch himself out, then start firing counterpunches in the final weeks of the campaign.
