thinking about rolling my own. anyone tried any of the machines out there? Been rolling our own now for over a year. The savings for Christmas is mind boggling! I can roll out a beautiful carton of cigarettes for under $8.00!!!

So using prohibitive taxation to change people's behaviour is OK with you?I thought I was making precisely the opposite point, but evidently I didn't say it well. Let me try again. I am concerned that excessively high taxation on cigarettes will lead liberals to push for "progressive" taxes elsewhere.
I despise the concept of attempts to alter behavior through taxation. It never has worked, never will, and simply engenders more taxes in an attempt to "balance things" -- never is a tax reduction contemplated in order to even things out. Personally, I'd like to see the same percentage sales tax on milk, Scotch, gasoline, prescription drugs, broccoli, etc.

Great graphic!!!!
I was looking at your chart comparing one of the online shops with NYC prices. Delaware prices are still cheaper than that and it's only a 2 and a half hour drive to the Delaware Line from NYC.

So what's your point? My point (evidently not well made) was that the allegedly regressive tax isn't necessarily regressive, and should not be used as an excuse to increase or initiate additional "progressive" taxes. Excessively high cig taxes will give liberals the cover they need to come after the achievers of society, because the liberals will in effect say that cig taxes fall disproportionately on the poor.

I am happy that my wife and I stopped smoking. We have saved much money. We probably wouldn't have lungs left either, if we had continued smoking. We both smoked quite a lot.

Along with New York, on July 1, the per-pack cigarette tax rose 70 cents in New Jersey, 49 cents in Vermont, 46 cents in Kansas, 40 cents in Indiana and Illinois, 31 cents in Ohio and 12 cents in Louisiana. Kansas does not get one red cent in cigarette taxes from me and never will because I stuff my own. And I know a lot of people who are heading over to Missouri to buy cheaper smokes and gas now that KS has increased their gas tax also.
Great post SheLion!

I buy the Senaca brand from an Indian tribe in NY. The cost for 6 cartons including shipping comes to 101.70.
Thats about 1.70 per pack.
We had been ordering Marlboro for them with no tax and our shipment would come with a free pack of Senaca in same style and flavor. We started to like them. Plus they throw in a free lighter..LOL
Of course we should quit but we still enjoy smoking.
I highly doubt the state will go after the reservations to provide lists on who is buying. Even if they did it would take years ....

my reservation charges 1.50 shipping per carton. We buy 6 cartons at a time. 9 dollars shipping is a lot less then gas to Maryland which is also highly taxed.
