Bush continues Clinton agenda

Referring to President G. W. Bush's new Department of Homeland Security, former President Bill Clinton told a gathering of Council on Foreign Relations members last week, "We have been building this for a long time." For once, Clinton told the truth.

What he began constructing following the Oklahoma City bombing, Bush has succeeded in bringing to fruition. America is about to have its very own Gestapo.

If Al Gore were president today, Republicans in Congress would no doubt rise in righteous indignation to quickly kill such a plan. However, with a fellow Republican in the White House, all such opposition has vanished. The bottom line is Bush is pursuing Clinton's agenda and getting a free pass.

Consider this: Bush has already issued 57 executive orders and has already created 47 new federal agencies. His Justice Department has declared that U.S. citizens, whom it declares to be "Enemy Combatants," have no constitutional rights – none. Such people do not even have the fundamental right of legal representation.

Georgetown University law professor David Cole rightly said, "This is really an astounding assertion of authority. It's not just that you have no right to a lawyer, it's that you have no right to even have a hearing. If this is true, then there is really no limit to the president's power to label U.S. citizens as bad people and then have them held in military custody indefinitely."

Furthermore, Bush now says he has the right to initiate first-strike attacks on any nation or people at (his) will. Imagine how future history will record America launching its own versions of Pearl Harbor.

Bill Clinton received more good news from the Bush White House.

Just this week, he learned that Attorney General John Ashcroft is ready to permanently close the government's investigations into Clinton's criminal activities. In other words, President Bush has declared that Bill and Hillary Clinton are above the law.

Beyond that, Bush's support for liberal policies on things such as the federalization of airport security, proposed amnesty for illegal aliens, a boost in funding for Clinton's AmeriCorps program, a worst-ever education bill and a constitutionally-challenged campaign-finance reform bill simply reveal Bush's perpetual propensity to continue Clinton-style government.

In spite of Bush's dismal record, he continues to receive the support and approbation of conservatives, pastors and Republicans throughout the country.

If Clinton would have known that a Bush administration would be this successful in promoting his policies and programs, he would have supported Bush and not Gore in the 2000 election. Maybe he did.

Read and weep folks. Mr. Baldwin tells it like it is. I know the anti dissenters at FR, will probably attempt to flame me but who cares. We have to be so ever vigilant in watching what the government does.

What is key here, notice how Mr. Baldwin mentions the CFR. Watch out because the CFR is not a good thing.

I read Ashcrofts response to the klintoon/gore version of a watered down Patriot Act after OKC, it was a well reasoned attack on the bill based on Constitutional grounds. I wish the man had kept his respect for our Constitution.
Even if most here trust these powers in the hands of a Republican adminstration that "safeguard" will not be in place forever.

Every "used to be" hero to the BushIdolators suddenly becomes a "commie lover" when they cross the line of pointing out facts about the new regime.

Chilling.

I find all of this so very disturbing. I do not have a good intuitive feeling about this idea of a Homeland Defense Department.

What the heck is going on and what the heck is the true agenda?

Ashcroft compomised his Christian beliefs...most obviously on abortion in order to get into power. He agreed to enforce immoral law, because it's "the law of the land".

We american Christians have only ourselves to blame for the growing tyranny that comes from a culture that is in deteriorating into. We have compomised and supported the goverment as it walks away from liberty and Godly goverment.

Ashcroft is a good example of the compromise. He said agreed to enforce unGodly immoral law in exchange for power. After all would it not be a good thing to have "one of us" on the inside!!

We are called by God to be obedient and leave the results up to him.

klintoon is over, the efforts to blame everything on him serve no purpose in addressing the problems now confronting this nation. Are conservatives going to stop using a scapegoat and address the issues that face us, or will we still be blaming everything on that buffoon in 08 when we show our smart card at internal checkpoints. I fear the latter.

It has been unbelievable watching this forum deteriorate into a bunch of social democrat lapdogs for the state. We are giving the government the tools to squelch dissent, appropriate broadcast time for their own propaganda, and seize anyone whom ONE PERSON determines is an enemy combatant. And here's the really awful part: You can't even get a hearing to contest being labelled an enemy combatant! At the same time, we have a RINO who can't go two days without dreaming up ways to INCREASE our 2.3 TRILLION DOLLAR budget!

Unbe-****ing-lievable.

He wanted to,but it clashed with his respect for his job and position.

Why do you think I call his crowning acheivement "The Office of Reich Security"?

They will when it's too late. When it becomes Personal to them. When someone they know is directly affected.

"Til then, it'll be Clinton Did It! 800 FBI Files (they're not even accurate on that, it was well over 1000) that CLINTON'S FBI turned over without a peep. No consideration or even a passing thought that if there's Blackmail material in them on ANY Congressperson, they DESERVE to be outed. After all, they're only our Leaders!

Of course Bush is successful in promoting Clinton policies. There are far fewer on the right willing to take on Bush than there would be willing to take on Clinton over the same policies. Remember the saying "Only Nixon could go to China". In some ways, Bush is even more a threat to the conservative cause that Clinton was.

His Justice Department has declared that U.S. citizens, whom it declares to be "Enemy Combatants," have no constitutional rights – none.

What puzzles me most about this is the timing. This concept of "enemy combatant" for a U.S. citizen wasn't formulated until Jose Padilla, the "dirty bomber" was arrested and promptly hidden away in a brig.

Meanwhile, Johnny Walker Jihad, a true enemy combatant, and a U.S. citizen, has an attorney and is getting a trial, as are two non-citizens, Moussaoui and Reid. All three of these have proven themselves dangerous creatures by acts, not intent. And yet Padilla is treated as a far worse villain.

I can't help but wonder what there is about Padilla that makes it mandatory that he be kept incommunicado forever. Could it be that he really is linked to the Oklahoma City bombing? The government's treatment of him defies logic in comparison to the other three, and opens the Justice Department to ridicule even by those who have no concerns about the Constitution.
